really I've seen them for 2 to 5 grand with over 100k on them. I'm saving jap til I'm 21 so two years today :D I'm thinking g40 or 16v mk2 but whichevr is more tuneable and nicer to rive

Paid £1000 for it 5mths ago, 125k, T&T till April 09, c/l, e/l, electric sunroof, PAS, lowered 40mm. Much nicer then driving a Mk3 Polo.

G40 is more tunable. BUT the Mk2 has more engine conversion options.

i wont want to do a conversion in the mk2 coz of insurance but how tuneable is the 16v engine

The best mod is to fit the 9A 2.0 16v bottom end, exhaust, panel filter and a good service and you will get about 170bhp.

Naturaly adding cams, headwork etc like any engine will help figures.

EDIT: The storm developments rollers reckon my car has 150.3bhp - K&N panel filter, exhaust and a £500 engine service. Take that with a pinch of salt though as i doubt an exhaust and filter adds 11bhp.

Its a very capable car in standard form.

il probs cam it, chip it and port polish it. with the money i have left over

Cant chip a k-jet.

Paid £1000 for it 5mths ago,

and its one of the most scene taxed colours available

don't be scared of higher mileage cars either, mine was on 180k a yeah before i got it and it had had the clocks replaced at some point before i had it so fuck knows what the true mileage was, gotta of been getting on for at least 190k and it still drove sweet and pulled like a coked up donkey

what can i do to do a k jet mate? not to clued on gti16v unitl i pull it apart and have a gander :D

a kjet is a mechanical injection system, the ECU only controls the ignition advance and no effect on fueling levels.

To modify a K-Jet, people add shims into the metering head and the warm up regulator as these control the fuel pressure. By playing with the warm up reg you can increase the fueling at the top end as this is the area a 16v needs a bit more once its been played with or it can run a bit lean. By changing the control pressure you are reducing the resistance in the metering head required to flow more fuel. I know thats a bit confusing but its something that can only really be done with a fuel pressure gauge an a rolling road and cant be guessed. Companies like Stealth Racing and Storm developments can do the 'WUR' mod as it is sometimes refered to.

the only thing even close to a Chip for a K-jet is KSTAR which is a piggyback ECU which is linked to a extra injector which supplies more fuel at top end... very hard to get hold of and not many people know A) what a full kit consists of B) how to install it an set it up as the software used to map them runs on V old version of windows lol.

For the money £200 quid on a 2.0 9A bottom end an use your existing KR head on it and its good for 160+ hp , combined with some more aggressive cams eg 268* and some head work you could reach 185hp

a 4 branch is a good investment but a port matched exhuast manifold is cheaper an has good results.

As Mcloving says dont be too scared of high millages, one of my bros old 16v ran 138hp on a standard engine with 199k on it and had a passat 16v with 238k on its original engine -> if its well maintained it will go for a long time! They can smoke a bit but most of the time this is just the valve stem seals dying, if left unattended it will eventually mean new valves an more expensive head work but it is not live threatening.

when i get one it will being going through intense engine work to get as much horses and torque as possible whilst staying reliable 220hp would be great and pretty quick i assume being only 960 kg :D

whilst staying reliable 220hp would be great

kr with 220... plus reliable?

You talking nicely modified 2.9 VR6 or 20v for a reliable 220bhp.

pickin up my 8v tues 8-)

So much for the air cooled

Why 8v? You not old enough for a 16v? Only cost me £850 when i was 20 with 3NCB + 3pts.

its guna cost me 1400 at 19 1ncb, 16v would of been 2k, this gti came up dirt cheap locally so had to have it!

Not as hard as you might think, although would have to go to 2.0 probably. I know someone with a 208 bhp Mk3 Golf 16v, still on standard ABF injection etc, just a good few mods and a mapping session. Imagine that with wilder cams and throttle bodies (it still runs the standard exhaust cam!)

he said he didn't want to swap lumps tho mr k... where the fuck you been any way mate? i've been missing you bad

ah dont want to swap engine so yeah 220 in thr 16v engine. i dont want the costs of servicing a g charger lol

doubt you will get 220 out of the original engine without some kind of boost, and even if you do i can't see it being reliable tbh.

true so a list of mods for 16v would be

9a bottom end

port polish and skim head

exhaust (mani,decat,system)

air filter

good service

would mod

cams

plugs,leads etc

new valve stems

ported exhaust manifold

I'm guessing that would see 200 and be reliable

Not sure on k-jet doing 200bhp, a couple have done it.

Your looking at 180+bhp with that setup.

Look what VW Motorsport use.

Or try using twin 45s.

180 bhp would be pretty quick though in a mk2 lol yeah would prob just stick to those mods. how much you reckon that would set me back seeing as you own one lol

kerrly, would a mk2 16v starter motor fit and operate on an 8v?

is it worth all the hassle? i mean your going from a 1.6 8v polo to a 1.8 16v golf gti, they may not the most powerful thing in the world but trust me there not sluggish. what sort of car experience have you had? if you've had some quick cars then fair enough, but if the polo's about it then i'd just get a 16v and take it from there. figures get chucked around so much these days that they mean next to nothing, theres so many big power cars being discussed day in day out that you can easily loose all concept of how quick some thing with as little power as 140bhp can feel.

i swapped my 16v for a mk3 vr6 and the 16v felt quicker than the vr with had about 40bhp more and 100k less.
