Lol ok. The bellhousing has a wading plug that you fit in to the bottom before you go wading, but no way could you fit a breather to it.

Some people drill a hole in the timing case to fit a breather, on the theory that when you hit cold water the air inside will contract, sucking water in through the seal. But I have never had any bother with it just the way land rover designed it, sealed.

I've never had any trouble. Neither has anyone I know.

But I have never had a series landy, so your mate could be on about those.

Got to say I'm 70/30 in tommo32s favour i have asked a local specialist about other breathers i may require they have told me they have only ever put breathers on the axles, a friend of mine mechanicly minded agreed with the specialist.

Polio i have contacted your mate Phil on ebay trying to understand what his kit consists of and the parts are designed for.

I'm very confused at the moment :retard:

Just reading your comment again My Landy asfar as wading is concerned it really isn't so much of a series any more with the axles being of an 87 range rover and the engine being an early defender 2.5td i should be right with your theory shouldn't i tommo

Make sure if you get a snorkle that EVERYTHING is totally sealed up, unfortunatly this includes siliconing your filter box up (which I didnt like hence a load of hassle making somthing with a seperate filter) Even the smallest hole can let enough water in to damage your engine.

BUT, be aware that driving through muddy water shafts your truck, After a while I got bored of replacing alternators, Prop UJ's, and wheel bearings, due to driving through water, not to mention the fact you get drenched, Its a miracle anything works after going so deep.

So I got bored and now try to avoid it, The feeling of getting stuck and watching the water pour in through the dashboard, slowly filling the footwells up, over the top of your wellies, and then your arse.... it gets a bit tedious after a while.

Sat in your truck waiting for a tow, with it ticking over because if you switch it off you know the starter motor might not play ball, watching the charging light start to flicker as your alternator slowly dies....

Yeah, you will be fine.

Another thing to bear in mind is if your axles are 87 RR then you have 10 spline diffs. (so you know if you break one) Any coil spring 10 spline diff will fit. They are all 3.54:1 ratio.

Be careful driving with a broken diff/halfshaft. They have a nasty habit of self destructing completely as the broken parts get caught up in the diff. Sometimes resulting in it locking up.

just read though all your comments, and so has phil

ring me on 07919853964 and i will explain everything, all tdi's have a threaded hole on timingcover and all landys have a threaded hole on bellhouse land rover didnt put there for no reason, wading pulgs arent up to much, thanks

Ah right, so I'm assuming this hole comes plugged with a bung from the factory? So unless you are a believer of the voodoo cold water air contraction theory then they are fine to leave as land rover intended, sealed.

Next time I get chance I will look for the timing case bung, as I know a few of the blokes i go off roading with have added a timing case breather but they did it by drilling and tapping the timing pump adjustment cover. Personally I dont see a need for it though, I changed the timing belt on my 90 and there was no evidence of water ingress, despite repeated dunkings above the bonnet.

My mate rob has just done the clutch on his 300 90, I will ask him if he found any mud in there when I get chance, Although it is totally sealed. so it can only really pull oil through the rear crankshaft oil seal or through the gearbox input shaft seal in the event of this witchcraft shrinking air theory. The bell housing on a defender LT77 gear box dosent have an additional hole, I've just checked, only the drain/wading plug.

The kit that LLAMA 4x4 sells includes an optional timing case breather but you buy a new pump cover plate with a hole in it, dosent use an existing hole...

I dont mean to sound argumentative but I just want to set the record straight, after all we have a bloke that wants to waterproof his truck here, and there is no point spending money he dosent need to. I'm not going to ring your mate because that would just be a recepie for disaster. I believe that I'm right and he beleives that he is right, if anyone needs telling its him lol!

hes got a g-reg disco, so it could be different, but, tbh I've absolutly no idea

tell them to search ebay for wading kits, and a number of people will back me up, all land rovers apart from them with timing chains have a timing cover breather, i supply a connector that screws into bell house and timing cover and then you plug the pipe into it, why would land rover put them wholes if it they were completely useless?

I will be purchasing the kit but not right this minute. I'm watching Phils add its live for another 25 days now so he will here from me soon enough. Cheers for your help

I have been doing some light wading in the floods past couple of days 1ft -1half ft, this morning i took the truck out after wednesday nights wading i was approaching some traffic dipped my clutch engaged 1st the clutch peddle never sprung back into position i got my foot under it and it was all floppy. Drove on the clutch was then fine. My own theory is the clutch release bearings does that sound normal after contaminated with water.

Or could it be something else to worry about.

Where is it on the timing case of a 200tdi defender engine? I cant find it.

No mention of it here...

or here... (guys saying you have to replace the FIP cover with one with a hole in)

This kit on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LAND-ROVER-90-110-RA...117116001r28407

provides brethers that fit in place of the wading plugs, which is a joke to be fair, as its a drain hole. This may be where we are getting wires crossed I think. Do your breathers also fit in the drain holes? (as blocked by the wading plugs that land rover provide for wading)

Edited by Tommo32

not something i can answer, I'm trying to persuade him to sign up, so he can sort all these

right, I'm the man selling the kits they are all still on ebay, the wading plugs are ok but breathers dont need taking out save all the ball ache! all 200tdi engines are the same, it will be at the bottom off the timing cover please ring me for more questions 07919853964, search my username on ebay phil_w_1991 and have a loot at what I'm selling many thanks phil

Ah, thats not a breather! thats the drain hole. Land rover provide a wading plug to fit in to that to seal it up when you go in water. Fitting a breather there is far from ideal, as the breather will not let it function as a drain hole and any leakage past the seals inside will see your case fill up with oil, potentially damaging your timing belt or clutch. And you will have no warning that its leaging because there will be nothing on the floor, so you could run your engine out of oil. Not to mention the fact that they are liable to be broken off under there if you catch them badly.

Although through laziness I left my wading plugs in all the time, just checking the oil level regular (which I do anyway) and taking them out every now and again to have a peek inside.

ye but if you are a land rover enthusiast then you are always checking oil etc, and if you a likelt to catch the timing cover breather, you are doing something SERIOUSLY WRONG!!!! end of the day the kit that i am selling is very good and i have sold a good few, they all seem happy

There's one good thing about a 19J IIRC, the adapter plate you can get to run a Ford Di lump :)

Lol fair doo, but how can you check its not filling up with oil? Surely removing the breather is a ball ache.

The way I see it land rover designed it so you can seal it up when you go in the water, it works. Dont fix it if its not broken, no need to overcomplicate things, after all, why does it need to breathe? Just increasing the risk of getting water in if you ask me.

Yeah, I dunno about for the LT77 that the 19j/200tdi go on to but i know you can for the series boxes.

2.5 Di = One of the best diesel engines ever made IMHO,

Probably be a little underpowered in a coil sprung landy though. Turbo Di = the future!

And good for 130bhp with the right turbo :-D
