I'll piece together a little writeup with the photos i got during the build. Now to get rid of the ignition problem! Any g40 guys suffered from ignition breakdown under boost?

Ian.

cheeky! would of liked the intercooler to be more stealthy but nice work no the less mate!

Cheers, I'll renew the stock ignition service parts first to give the standard system the best chance of working, and if i still see a miss then its time to look into a more powerful system.

It wasnt my ideal choice either to be honest but with the length of the cooler this was the most direct routing i could make. It functions very well, getting some nice cool IAT's which is the main thing, function over fashion and all that :)

I know one chap had ignition problems under boost which later turned out to be a worn rotor arm.

Think I may have seen you on Friday going towards Malvern? Either that or your car has a twin

I'm picking up new leads, cap, and rotor in a min (Y). Fingers crossed!

Yeh i go up there a fair bit to a mates house.

Ian.

I've had the problem of missing under boost twice now on both the yellow mk2 g40 and grey mk3 g40, both of these were down to the king lead, new king lead on each and the problem was solved. but renew all your ignition components, , what plugs are you using? you may be able to get colder ones from NGK

forgot to say mate the cars looking sweet!

Cheers mate :)

Leads, cap, and rotor now on and..............................................SORTED!!! Pulls all the way through very smoothly. Nearly had my arm off testing it :p Very happy to have it running well now. Dyno time soon should see some more power from a slightly harsher ignition map.

Ian.

wooop get it done! want to see some videos too :ninja:

Defo get vids up!

I'll try and grab a video soon on a dry day. Oh and to grungeisdead, I'm using NGK BP6ESZ gapped down to .55mm from 7. These plugs are from the MH and NZ engines. The only plugs i could find for the AEE were the triple electrodes which of course could not be gapped.

It is handy yeh. I may get it on this week or possibly Saturday morning if work is quiet. Next steps for the car will be brakes, interior (lighter), then wheels, and suspension.

  • 2 weeks later...

THE END.

Bits and pieces will be up for sale tomorrow excluding megasquirt. Time to move on to something else now. The polo had a good run though and definatly went out in style :p

Ian.

Ah, crap. That's not good mate. Rebuild, harder, better, faster, stronger?

Went out in style? Is the car ok, just the engine had it?

Can you give me a bit of info on the inlet side of things please cheif? Are you using the AEE inlet with the Weber injectors? Did it require much alteration?

Bang, clatter clatter clatter. I'll PM you in a little while once i have some more time.

Ian.

Well that didnt last long! Haha. Whyd it blow?

  • Author

Not entirely sure. Fuelling and spark were fine. No signs of det on any of the pistons, just a nice clean break on the ring land and a casting line at the base of the crown. Maybe it was simply heat and fatigue.

Going to start a new project now as i cant condone spending any more on the polo to get it to the same power level in a reliable form.

Ian.

Thought i recognised that car, seen you driving around by Blackpole a few times, lovely looking thing she is :)

its going 16v of G then..... :-p

Its probably going to someone else once the parts have sold ready to be started as a new project. Its done me very well and been fun and interesting for the time i've had it though. I'll be sad to see it go but it will be nice to start something else fresh with more scope for high power.

Ian.
