Alii-b's Mk2 Breadvan

Featured Replies

Ok so i was given this car by my uncle as a present.

Its a 1.05l, polo C, 126k miles and didnt start!

(how kind of him! :D)

i was so excited haa.

had to bring it home on a trailer as there was no tax or mot and I'm still not allowed to drive yet due to some annoying driving test.

(who even takes those anymore?? :p)

anyway....

bought a new battery, it started YAY!

cleaned it the first day i had a minute to spare

spent all of january doing nothing as it was dark when i got home and i have work on the weekends

wednesday is the only day i have off so it the only day i work on it if i do.

DSC02180.jpg

i attempted at cleaing the engine bay but that took far too long and i could be asked.

i finished the right wheel arch and stopped.

took off the really white bumper, shoe polished it back to black

put it back on and got it ready to go to the garage for an mot to find out everything that was wrong with it.

got 200m up the road and it cut out.

my beloved car died on me.

it started, idles but it if you tap the gas it cuts out.

i have no clue as to what it could be.

soooooooo

the plan is to either srcap the car, i take all the parts i want and buy a new mk2 the break whats left of the car

or maybe sell it is and see if anyone really wants it

or take the crazy choice and repair it. (with no mechanical knowledge on cars :p)

any ideas there?

and any ideas on why it way be cutting out?

Thanks for reading

Alex

Why would you brake it? I'm sure there is very little needing done to get it running, unless it needs the sills welding which is also not impossible. Get a haynes and see if you can figure things out , do a simple service....

Same as my first car same colour too. It would polish up great, blacken bumpers ,service and you've great solid motor. My 1043cc one was far more reliable than my 1272cc one. When I got my first one I didn't know anything about cars and it was the perfect car to learn from.

yeah

the main jobs needing to be done are:

brakes

head gasket

head bolts

cam belt

tyres (got new alloys)

HD leads

air filter maybe

a new boot lock as the previous owner lost the key to it

suspension cause it bouces more than a bouncy ball! :p

and a new exhaust

and those are the jobs i know that need to be done, i guess there will be more needed.

worst does come to worst, i can look for a new engine, maybe £250 - £350 if I'm lucky.

i hope :ninja:

basic jobs are:

finish blackening the bumper, iv started but had to rush puttin it back on for the mot which it didnt make.

put the steering wheel column cover back on

and something needs to be done about the paint, i washed it and the water in the bucket was red when i finished

fix the rear passenger side door card

  • Author

iv decided to take on the job especially as my mate is now (hopfully) selling me his old engine from a mk1 golf i think.

hope to have it up and running soon.

I had one of these as my first car and in the same colour too. Great little cars if tuned right and looked after right. Id get it sorted if you can. If anything youll learn alot about cars and that cant be a bad thing.

um, you might wanna just give it a basic service and clean out all the jets in the carb before swapping the engine!

cutting out under acceleration can be a few things, most of them fairly simple

if it idles ok then its not the ignition system (points plugs leads dizzy etc) but change the points and plugs anyway, simple job, and get someone to reset the timing for you

take the carb off and give it a good clean up, if you go into an office supply type shop like staples you can get little cans of air for blowing dust off keyboards, squirt some of that through all the jets in the carb (plenty of info on the net already about carbs, wont go into too much detail, but the jets are little copper coloured tubes)

if it still doesnt want to go, check the fuel pump, it might not be supplying enough fuel to the engine when you accelerate

and i only really got into "cars" about a year ago, you learn quickly when you need to, garages can be expensive and you'll be surprised how much you can do yourself when you take the time to have a think about it!

Good luck with it, looks like a good starting point :)

cheers for the advice.

but it works out cheaper if i replace the engine as i wont need to replace the cam belt, alternator (if nessesary), head gasket or bolts.

but ill try and fix up the engine a little and i dunno, might sell it on here if someone wants a little engine.

thanks for the support everyone.

I'm hoping to get it running asap.

cant wait to get it on the road!

:)

Might be worth doing the headgasket on it yourself as its the easiest engine you will ever have so it might be good practice for in the future.

If you do fit the new engine (Which is more difficult then a headgasket) why would you not buy a new £5 cambelt?

Also dont be a lazy bastard and clean that engine bay!

Dude, all you need is some degreaser and a brush. then hose it all off and it will look ten times better than it does now :-)

  • Author

i know the head gasket might be easier but its still gonna be a 1L :p

so the GT engine will be in hopfully before the weekend for a but more ooompff

in the mean time i need to get some degreaser to wash the engine bay because i am gettin abuse for being lazy for not cleaning it!

 (I'm getting there i just have to work with a busy schedule!)

i have tried with the brush but there is too much in the way and it just bashes the sides.

i might need a smaller brush or an alternative.

also, does anyone know what this might be.

it looks like an alarm sort of device but there is nothing to turn it off and nothing sets an alarm off.

The device in the top right corner of the picture in the bay.

Cheers

Alex

that is an alarm buddy! i had the same thing in mine when i got it, but i just pulled mine out!?

  • Author

yeah

seems pointless having an alarm no device to turn it off.

ill take mine out then along with the engine as the new one comes this friday :D

the old engine is almost out, just have to take off the speedo cable connected to the geadbox and then take it out.

its in such a stupid place :p

i have a question though.

i have the GT engine and i need to know what i will need specifically for the GT

or what i can use from the old engine.

i have the loom.

alternator

gearbox and driveshafts

air filter

and a few other parts, just not that sure what they are.

any info will be great.

thanks.

sounds like my own little bargin - but with more problems!! i too only get wednesdays off and have to work weekends! looks pretty smart.

have you got the fuel pumps for the GT engine ? u will definatly need those!

  • Author

nope

no fuel pump. i got a load of mk2 polo stuff off my mate from a clear out.

old engines almost out

just need to disconnect the drive shafts and gear linkage i think

Wooo

Engine is out

Will upload a pic when i can

I plan to spray the engine bay to give a better finish.

But first things first... Clean!!! Which I can finally do properly!

You will need the the GT fuel pump that is under the car and everything attached to that bracket (accumulator and fuel filter). You will need the fuel lines from a mk3 (any mk3 will do) as they are larger diameter than the carb fed mk2's. You will need the intank (lift) pump that goes in the top of the fuel tank which can be got at under the rear seats. You will need the wiring for the lift pump and rear fuel pump can be found on the interior loom on a mk3. Just cut out the wiring that you need. Also a GT rear axle can be used and you may as well do this when changing the fuel lines as they run over the top of the rear axle and can be a ball ache to fit. Some of the engine bay loom may need to be altered for the headlights as mine did. Tip: make sure all electrical bits are done to the best standard you can and make sure that all plugs (loom etc) are pushed in as far as they can be and all the relays are pushed in properly. Make sure all earth leads are in place and are in good order (may as well renew for the cost. This makes problem solving much easier if there is a problem come first start up.

Be carful to fully drain the tank before starting with the fuel lines as it can be messy. You will have to block off the feed and return in the bottom of your fuel tank too. (i just used a u shaped piece of fuel hose and stainless hose clips for a temp measure. The feed and return at tank are no longer used. Fuel pump and lift pump sort all that out. Check the fuel pump diagram on etka.

You will need a 5 speed arb if your mk2 is a 4 speed also.

Also exhaust may need some fettling but than can be done at the very end.

Have you got all the fuel injection parts of the GT engine??

Hope this helps.

Barney

All the best

ok so its been a while since i posted on here

The engine is in the bay but my dad lost the underside gearbox mounts. should have some on the way though.

its currently sitting on a load of bricks. not too good i know.

i have a fuel pump but not the inline.

just need to figure how to attach it, but ill do it later.

my mate had a clearout of his garage to make way for mk1 golf stuff so i 'aquired' all his mk2 polo stuff

so i now have a full exhaust system for the GT, new air intake, driveshaft and a whole load of other stuff, so lucky me, i dont have to go looking for it.

here is the engine in the bay with the loom on the top.

IMG_0677.jpg

I should be spending most of next week working on it so i hope to get quite a bit done.

thanks for the advice and comments everyone

Alex

Nice! I'll be tackling my first engine swap when my MK3 square shell is ready for G40 lovin! How did you find yours?

  • Author

it wasnt too bad. seeing as i didnt hace access to an engine crank we had to make do with some scaffolding poles and a winch. (not ask why or how we got them, i do not know!).

but yeah, dropped the engine to the floor, dragged it from underneath.

the new one went in over the top.

proberly find it easier doing it that way.

its a fun experience though and a good way to learn about the basics of the engine.

cant wait till its on the road!

in the mean time while this is sitting on the drive, i bought a second mk2 polo breadvan to keep me on the road.

great little run around. its another 1L and in a good condition.

at the moment its sort of broke down going through a stupid unavoidable puddle and now the cam belt isnt turning so i have 2 cars off the road.

some of you might have seen it around.

you may have seen it at no rice with gold rims and eye lids. It still has the eye lids but they werent on in these photos

I should also be putting these resprayed steels on as the stocks look a little battered!!

Edited by alii-b

oh yeh iv seen this black one b4 at vw players looked nice with those gold rims , thought they were compromotives

  • Author

Yeah they were nice but they rubbed too much on the arch and it bent it a bit so it started cutting into the tyres so I swapped to steels. Hopfully have one on the road soon lol.
