Noisy 5th Gear

Featured Replies

Hi,

My fifth gear in my valver is very noisy when travelling at motorway speeds. It's like a whining noise that that gets louder the faster I go. Could this mean just 5th gear needs replacing, or could it be gearbox bearings? My oil level is ok and checked regularlly. Is it common with 6ns? Any help would be great.

Cheers

Neil

Why's that mate? Bearings or gear?

i have the same problem, i though it was just cause of the close ratio gear box that it was loud.

i hope it is cause of that, thanks for your reply mate

check your gearbox oil level ASAP! Fifth is the first one to get starved of oil if it gets low and if you don't add some more (ideally renew the lot of) oil then you'll end up needing a new box.

thanks for your reply mate, i think you've helped me out on every post i've made, really appreciate it

Dude, i have the same problem... hope you don't mind me jumpin' in... saves me a new topic.

Keep getting a majorly loud whine when de-accelerating (clutch up) in 4th and 5th gear…

When I dip the clutch however it goes away…

I’ve had a new clutch installed 3 weeks back… The gear stick, clutch and everything feels great! Infact, it feels the best it’s ever been.

The noise started before the new clutch was installed… So nothing to do with that.

I had the day off work today so decided to grease up the gear linkages and top up the gear box oil.

Still no joy… Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I’ve seen a post before and remember someone saying it could be the clutch pressure plate?

However, when I spoke with the guy who did my clutch he said it was nothing to worry about?

Cheers

Liam

Have you checked the oil level? That's the first thing really. If that's OK then simply replacing the oil for new if it's old can help.

i had noises etc and it started jumping out of fifth and about a month later the whole thing catastrophically failed!

seriously people, get saving!

i seem to remember a mate of mine mentioning that 5th gear can be adjusted inside the box?

you can adjust the fifth gear selector fork by adjusting an allen head bolt if you remove the end cover off the box. Which can cure the popping out of fifth issues sometimes if you can see the synchro hub isn't fully engaging with the ring when it's in fifth gear with the end cover off.

But a whining in 5th is usually a good sign of a low oil level which will lead to a generally whiney and rattly box if left unchecked and then eventually, total failure. I bet loads of box failures on polos could be avoided if people checked and/or changed the oil at first signs of whining or any other issues.

I seem to recall seeing an FAQ somewhere about adjusting the 5th gear. It's actually quite simple but you will have to replace the oil (no bad thing!) as it'll all come out when you take the end cover off. The end cover is only 3x 8mm bolts though not hard to do at all.

I check my oil reguarlly and it is correct, level with the hole. Could renewing the oil solve the problem?

Pain in the arse to be honest... unless you can get it in the air.

The bumper and stuff tend to get in the way when you fill it back up.

I'm gona buy more oil tomorrow... empty it and re-fill as per hayesey's advise.

if it's never been done then yes I'd do that before anything else. Also check the alignment of the fifth gear as per the thread in FAQ (pretty sure it's there anyway!) section while you've got the oil drained.

KK,

Just placed an order for the following:

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-744-castrol-sy...c-gear-oil.aspx

As soon as i get this stuff i'll empty the old crappy stuff... and pop this in.

Hopefully that'll resolve the issue.

If not then i guess the box is doomed!!

Cheers All.

Hahaha... Dude, Can you please tell me what the lotto numbers are going to be?

Driving back from work, 5th gear up a slight hill.

Anyways, Started to loose a fair bit of power.

Got to some traffic lights. Went to pull off and CLUNK, BANG, "OH FOOK" I could get in 1st, 2nd... However, It was making all the nasty noise's you can think of…. Wanted to stall, jumping the lot.

So, my car is dead mi thinks... Just had a new clutch 3 weeks back too! Ah well, new car for me! banger for a bit i guess. Sod a recon box i'll get a crappy car run it to the ground and save for a VR6.

All the best neilpaul89!

I'll get some oil tomorrow... want to buy it off me? i'll sort u out a deal.

dam does anyone know if i replace 5th gear will it prevent the gearbox going?

My 1.6 6N used to whine in 5th. Changed the oil in the gearbox and has been ok since.

Worth changing the oil to start with. It's most likely been in there since new!

liam, they my steels :D

lol

shame about the gearbox fella!
