Hello been meaning to post on here for ages.

Here's my 1272cc MH square. Very standard looking pretty tired paint but has plenty of bits done like smoothing and generally simplifying. The paint is a bit of a patchwork but there is no rust anywhere.

This is my only car and will be for the next 2years as I am once again a student which makes my budget pretty much £0.00

Philj 60/40 lowerage

Weber DMTR carb, GK inlet manifold with smoothed heater element hedgehog.

Exhaust has standard 4-1 mainfold with standard front section into standard flexi. Thereafter straight through homebrewed 40mm section (requires s bending round gearchange housing) into G40 back box. The jury is out with this as it is a bit raspy!

It has vwII callipers with Goodridge braided hoses, brembo disks and pagid pads. New rear drum brake cylinders from GSF with new VW bolts.

The inside is pretty mint and I've fitted component speakers but I've no funds to get an amp to drive them, I'll get there...

Plans are some alloys off a G40 (bbs ra's) or golf (something like tarantulas) which I'll do a refurb on. Other than maybe some more ICE that's it really.

The only other thing I might do is respray it on a budget. Having done a lot of research and made plenty of errors I reckon I can paint it panel by panel over the summer months. Probably just a blow over of red but maybe a brown (which is close in tone to the red). No matt paint nonsense though.

Check out the fuel filter, it's the wrong way round!

i miss my squarebacks, cant fit sod all in the coupe! good spec going on there, just needs some GT steels or something a bit chunkier.

Nice Squareback, it looks really good and nice. It has the same engine as my blue squareback

looking good...very similar to mine with the pop up roof etc

wierd though...my seats have grey vynil and yours are black

dont forget I'm a painter if you need any tips for the repaint :)

Nice tidy little breadvan,that.

Engine bay is particularly good,though id go satin black with the cam cover and airbox,as it all looks so factory otherwise.

Best bit for me though is the smoothed-frame tailgate. These look so much better without the spoiler imo,subtle for those who dont know different,but transform it for me.

That looks so clean. How difficult is the job on smoothing tail gates?

If you can weld it's not that hard to cut and weld little circles of sheet metal into the holes

What I did find though is once welded you really need to grind them enough to take a skim of filler so that when priming/painting you don't expose bare metal when rubbing down between coats. This was a learning experience for me, the finish is pretty poor but I hope to re-do it in the fairer months.

It's more the knack of getting the paint prep right that is hardest,

Some tailgates don't come with the rear plastic spoiler thing which I personally don't like but you've still got the other holes to fill..

It looks good. I would like to do it with mine. Probably sounding really dumb... i thought you just filled it in...

Some folk just use filler, might be ok for small holes but a bit of a compromise. Don't know if it lasts?

Just updated the exhaust (see first post) which along with the weber and GK inlet has definately improved it's performance (and it's volume lol). Been quite a hairy drive in the wet and windy weather we've been having. Really need to get some wheels sorted now even just some GT steels or 13" early golf alloys to get an inch more rubber down.

Also need to sort some new engine mounts and rear axle bushes in the near future..

So I can surely brag sleeper status now?

Just an update, winter has been harsh :(

Tarantulas with 185/60's quite a bit of cutting of inner rear arches but certainly makes it a bit more chunky looking compared to standard steels..

Having no plastic bananas doesn't help, thankfully just surface rust..

So plans are to get it through another year:-

About to fit rear wheel bearings

Buy/fit new radiator

Sort exhaust/ maybe fit mk3(2f) 4-2-1 manifold, I'm not convinced with restrictive 4-1 manifold with silly thin secondary market front downpipe.

Fit 5 speed gearbox

Then get it rolling roaded and the carb re-jetted for optimum performance/efficiency

Sort paint, somehow respray on a budget maybe a satin paint for ease of application.

Then onto my Mk2 Golf..

Now sold on as a project to someone else in the Ayrshire area. Was very close to being scrapped.
