ok I'm getting a mk2 polo squareback project for free, yes free

and it needs a new perol tank, i have soucred out a second hand mk3 tank and I'm wondering will it fit, some say it might but i need to be sure

anyone know anything on this situation?

It'll fit the car, but it won't have the right outlets for a carb'd engine. Better to get the right one.

There are two sorts, small pre-85 and the larger one fitted after 85. You can fit a small tank on a later car, but to fit a large tank to a later car you need to convert to the later handbrake setup.

I'm still a bit confused here, so the tank will fit the car but its not use?

The mk3 tank is for injection engines so needs a lift pump. GSF part 29318. It will physically fit, but only sensible if converting to an injection engine.

There are two mk2 tanks for carb vehicles which have the low-level outlet and return pipes which carbs need.

• * A small one 36 litre also used on mk1 polo/audi 50 upto 1985. Not stocked by GSF - try fueltanksdirect.

* A larger one 42 litre used from August 1984. GSF part 29317.

Yes they overlapped.

To fit the 42 litre tank to an early mk2 polo means replacing handbrake cables and compensator because there's a guide wheel and stirrup for the brake cables that goes exactly where the space for the extra 6 litres of fuel is.

The 42 litre tank is slightly heavier than the 36 litre. The spout still appears too straight for an unleaded banana pump nozzle, but I've not tried yet... still sorting the handbrake conversion. (I now know there are two Golf Mk3 handbrake mounts).

Yeah on an '87 it'll definately use the 42 litre tank.
