Has any one ever had i nice number plate on there car not a cherished one but one of those when you buy a car and its got your iniatals on the number plate. I have a plate on my land rover its valued at £800 nearly as much as the car is worth i want to put this plate on retention. does anybody know how i go about it. Looked on dvla site cant see the info i need such as is there any cost? will the dvla give my car a new regestration?.

Some plates cannot be removed.

It will normally state this on the log book

"this registation cannot be transfered/is non-transferable"

Have you tried actually calling the DVLA?

Not called them yet thought i would have an ask on here first. It doesn't say non transferable on the v5 so thats good news.

Fill in a form v317, which you can download from the DVLA's website. The plate is then placed on retention or enters the cherished transfer process, depending on what you want to do, and the donor vehicle is issued with a new none-transferable reg number, from the same year. Only real downside is these numbers are generally quite high (think I've had 996, 994 and that sort of thing issued in the past).
