i have a genesis with a gt engine, its a k reg . i thought that k regs had to have cats because they made the laws tighter.

but other people on the site with k regs have de-cats.

but i dont want to spend 210 notes on a new system and then finding out that it was not needed.

As long as the emission levels are within what should pass a cat test, presence of a cat doesn't matter. My Camry accidently passed a cat test due to the tester missing the fact it hadn't got one, so if it can, a polo should.

mine wont pass then as it's always spitting flames.

correct mer if i am wrong here, but border line is july/aug 1992 i think.

missus mx5 is 1992 import, but dont know what month it was manufactured in so would of had to do a cat test for mot.

I say would of, cos its an import, so it doesnt!

imports are different again i think... think you can get away with even later with them... am sure a mate told me that. but he is full of shit sometimes! lol

J reg gets away with it but anything after August 1992 must have a catalyst present IF it came out of the factory with one.

When they type the Reg number into their little magic box it tells them everything now.

At the last MOT the guy tested it 4 times on two machines as the emissions were practically non-existent and he thought his machines were faulty, and despite not needing a cat test it we put it through with the K-reg settings and it passed by a large margin.

Some garages will stick a cat on as a temp, but its difficult with polo's as its joined to the same section as the downpipe.

will a cat work if its in place of the back box?

I've got a side exit and want to make up a decat pipe, and if i could put the cat on the back for mots it would be much easier than having to split the exhaust every year! lol

all i can say is mines a 94 G40 and the cat fell off on the way to my friendly mot station

if you dont ask you dont know , heard of people getting cat tests from other cars as well :-)

cats certainly don't like being cold, might need the heat for the reaction as well. I think that's what the air injectoin is for on newer cars? It only comes on when the engine is cold

I used to have a non-cat H reg golf that used to pass the later emissions test. Best tip is, nice long motorway run just before the test and it really helps with the emissions. Last test on my polo was 0.0% CO, as was the one before that, and the one before that, etc.......
