HELP???

I put the pancake filter back on for now, can anoyone tell me how to fit it step by step???

If you've got oil everwhere your crankcase breather is blocked (1" wide pipe that goes into the bottom of the panlid filterbox).

Also, do a search in this section for "elbow" there's loads of threads about this mod.

Here's a couple to get you started:

http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?...42&hl=elbow

http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?...96&hl=elbow

Just to add, Theres a couple of types of elbow. The one with the breather pipe connection sticking out of the front is not the one you want, it needs to have this pipe sticking down underneath so you can connect it to the polo breather hose.

Hi mate,

I have searched and rear those two threads, first off the golf housing wouldnt fit on the injector so i had to cut out part of the inside then it fitted but it didnt fit straight for where the bolts went in, also is there supposed to be a seal that sits on the injector like there was on the old filter?? Also i got all the bolts that came off the golfs filter but dont understand how the two sets of bolts work i just had it so the bolts that went into the top of the filter went into the injector? I also dont know where the small pipes from the back of the old filter go? Do i have to block anything off? Do you think the oil went everywhere because i had it all set up wrong?

If you could help me as much as possible it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I'll help as much as I can. :)

So when you say you've searched and read those two threads, was this before or after I recommended them? there's some info in those threads about the bolts that hold the throttlebody on. You need to remove the old bolt threads from the injector. The golf bolts come in two sets - there's the set that replace the polo threads and there's another set that screw into these; these hold the throttlebody on.

13 and 14 in the first pic and 17 in the second is what you need to be looking at - as you can see there is a gasket between the injector and the elbow. 17 is what replaces the original threads in the polo injector, 14 is what screws into 17

The problem you are having with fitting it sounds to me like its not the right one - where did you get it from? It just so happens that I got a couple a while back to sell on so I have a pic of what they should look like.

Of the two elbows in the pic, the one at the top is the one you want, the one at the bottom will still work, but you will need to extend the breather pipe round to it. There is a third (and possibly forth type) They are much larger than these where the VW bit is - as far as I know they will all fit the 1.05 and 1.3 injector unit - but one of the above ones is the best bet because they are for the smaller engines.

Can you put a photo up of the one you've got?

The only other time I have heard of the fitment issue you're having is when someone tried to fit one to a mk2 carb. The bolt spacing is different (although it looks a similar size)

You really must connect everything up that was connected to the pancake filter, there should've been 2 small white pipes that go to a little red/orange thing - this controls the warm air flap on the pancake. Since you won't be able to use that with the golf elbow you need to find out which of these pipes goes to the throttlebody and block the end off with a small screw, otherwise your engine won't run properly.

The big black pipe that's spewed oil doesn't necessarily need to be plugged into the golf elbow (but since it has a connector for it you might as well) If you don't connect it, you need to cover the hole on the golf elbow to stop unclean/unfiltered air getting into the engine.

One way to check if the oil breather is blocked is to take the oil cap off and blow down the oil breather. If there is alot of resistance at first then the breather is blocked and should be removed and cleaned. You should also consider changing the oil after this test as you'll have sent the blockage into the sump -it shouldn't do any harm becuase the oil pump has a strainer on it, but it's best to be on the safe side. The oil problem is just a coincidence, nothing you've done. :)

Mine is a different shape again as the oil breather is directly opposite the filter side.

its the little bit covered by tape to the left of the yellow dot.

you cant use the bolts off the golf as the injector plate is a diffrent shape to the polo one, if yours looks like mine then pop down to halfords they sell a pack with 2 black bolts in that are the perfect size and thread to fit with out any cutting, I cant really help you with the oil problem as I've never experienced it, but if the pipe on yours is the same type as the original pipe in mine then you could have twisted or kinked it, halfords sell some radiator hose that will do the trick. (god i feel like an advert)

That's the fourth type then: The third type is like that but the breather pipe is at the front, like the bottom one in my pic. The golf bolts definately work with the smaller elbows. Sounds like what you're saying could be the answer to all his problems? :)

This is definately being made sticky!

When i fitted the 1.8 TB i tried out the 1.8 injectorplate for a laugh, the car ran brilliantly (slight overfueling), but the bolts i had fitted sat too high to tighten up the elbow when i swapped the injector plate back to the 1.3 they fitted perfectly again. think golfs have raised bolting points and polo's are flat. would look but sold the plate to RATTA for his car.

I managed to kink the pipe once and it just built up pressure before firing shite across my engine bay.

I really need a copy of etka, would save so much hassle.

Oil breather's blocked looks like its coming out from the dipstick

Ok, tommorow ill definetly buy a new one, but could it be anything else?? I'm thinking of buying a oil catch tank will this help??

Cheers

It may not need replacing, it could just be a kink in the pipe or something silly - a catch tank will only be somwhere for the oil to go, it won't necessarily fix the problem.

Here's good info on breather issues that will help you understand your potential problem, certainly helped me.

This thread would be good to sticky for anyone doing the golf elbow thing..

I'll put it in the FAQ section once the guy with the problem knows I'm going to put it there. :)

Yes please do id like to help people with the same problem, thanks for that MacColl was very interesting, according to it my engine is knakerd :( " if the engine is very rattly you are probably better off replacing it." mine is rattly but not very i thought that was just the tappets need adjusting, did you sort your problem in the end MacColl?? Theres no kink in the pipe, dont know what to do :(

Where do you live mate maybe someone locally with a trained ear can have a listen

  • Author

Near Kettering Northants, that would be greatly appreciated if anyone could as i dont want to give up and get rid and i cant afford another polo atm.

It wasn't so much that I had a problem, more understanding why there are two breather pipes because earlier mk2's didn't have the chamber and the extra pipe that t-junctions off the main one.

Hope you get sorted out, I always think the worst part is not knowing exactly what the problem is.

  • Author

Fingers crossed its all sorted, one of the seals that holds the rocker cover one was knakerd and i haven't had any more oil, i might of hav a little bit from the air filter is that normal?? Also i bought this catch tank (below) and I'm a bit simple when it comes to knowing what the pipes are called so I'm not sure what pipe i connect where I've done a search but people call them by there proper names and i dont know which ones which :( also as i have the golf elbow with the breather pipe coming underneath now I'm fitting a catch tank would it help if i got the one where it comes out of the right hand side as ill be fitting it near the bulkhead as it seems that where most people have fit them, also the breather pipe that goes on the rocker cover on mine is a all saggy and limp! can i use any other thicker/stronger pipe insted but still using the correct piping??

Cheers

Can anyone help please ????

Did you ever have a look at the breather pod on the back of the engine? black circular bottle thing under the inlet manifold) Two screws and it comes off.
