I have had the same problem for a while. Still none the wiser, I just live with it

Might want to try to clean the carb out.

Lol this going to sound really stupid but as I'm no mechanic what you mean by clean the Carb ? where is itt ? I've now got another problem now i took the advice of disconnecting the battery to see if it will fix the cutting out problem and now my idleing has gone up and down and not ideling as it should be... Do i need to get the TB re set now ?

Yeah lol sorry I had problems with my idling as it was idling at 1800-2000 and then going up and down. i had the throttle body cleaned out like week ago since that was done the the car was idling fine but now and again kept cutting out so i took your adivce disconncted the bat for few mins . re connected it and now its idling erratically ! lol and its back to how it was before idling at 1800 to 2000 then back down again !!! .. Sounds a bit confusing i know

Mine was doing this.

I cleaned the throttle body out with carb cleaner. That stopped it stalling at junctions, but the hunting got loads worse. It started revving between 1500-2500, which was really embarrasing.

After trawling through loads of threads on here i bought a new temperature sender from VW. Fitted it today and the car now has a perfect idle.

Hope that helps.

1800-2000? :s

That's rather high.

Mine idles too low, when I pull up at a red traffic light, it drops to below 300 almost cutting out sometimes, other times cutting out completely, if it doesn't cut out it levels off at around 300-350.

Well i meant clean the TB with carb cleaner

Sounds like you had the same problem like i did, well having that problem again now lol.. I did changed the temp sender few months ago as i was told that may help but didnt do nothing for me .. But I did notice that when i disconnect the throttle body and re connected it after 15min of cleaning the throttle body it was idling perfect .. Worth a try again you think ?

yeah I'm thinking about gettin a new 1 soon praying that will cure it as its really imbarsing . What was happing to your car ? like what was it doing ? Did you do like all the discouncting the bat for a few hrs ect....

i had this problem on one of my 16v tried cleaning just the throttle body then had it reset at auto electricans but just kept revving up after a day you need to take the throttle body off then clean the inlet with carb cleaner and it should run fine sorted mine out hope this helps

anyone solved this problem?? i have tried taking the TB off and cleaning it, tried re-setting the ecu and running red ex through it but nothing seems to work longer than 2 weeks, i had a long journey in the car about a week ago and it only went and made it worse

its a shame because i love my car and i want it to run well :)

  • 1 year later...

..........my 6n2 is brilliant - except when it cuts out. I've had the car for years, it's immaculate but worth nothing, costs me fuel, insurance and tax - you would think that a company like VW would be keen to keep their rap sheet clean and sort this! It's been going on for 10 years now and I gave up after a year of taking it to VW and many other experts, the answer was always the same: ' it's not showing any fault codes and we can't get it to cut out when we test it, but we'll change the spinglemasher or clean the binglebongle and that should do it.' Nearly a £1,000 later it was time to stop. So, for the last 9 years I've just learned to live with it, car cuts out, turn off ignition and back on again - meanwhile the light display thinks it's Christmas - EPC, Engine Check light and the rest - but the engine fires up again and all at speed. One day it will die permanently, and while I'll regret having to spend money on another car, I won't miss the constant worry of the ECU making decisions that I would rather it didn't and cutting out while I'm halfway round a corner or trying to overtake a lorry. The last mechanic who worked on the car changed the P-O-L-O on the back of the car to P-O-S, which is completely true.
