are they because the linkage i had on my 4 speed don't fit on the 5 speed gearbox. iv got a 5 speed in my mk3 and the linkage looks complete different to my 4 speed linkage in my mk2.

My golf has exactly the same linkage as my mk2 polo and I've fitted 4 and 5 speed boxes in the golf without changing anything.

They're not the same on a mk2, though you can commit bodgery to make them work. My silver Mk2 was done like this before I bought it, I took one look at it thought "yeah, I should fix that", but it worked, so I never did.

Edit (just reread) However, if it's rubbing on the ARB, it's the ARB you need to swop for a 5-speed one.
