hi all what is a crank sensor and what does it do ,where is it located cheers and no smart arse replies just simple answer will do thanks.

it senses the rotation of the crankshaft so the ecu knows when to fire the spark plugs. They normally have a toothed wheel which passes close to the sensor, there'll be one tooth missing from the wheel so it has a reference point to know where tdc is.

As for where it is, usually down on the end of the crank at the cambelt end but if you want useful replies it might help if you say what car you are talking about and what engine is in it.
