An MX-5 is a proper driver's car with an excellent rear wheel drive chassis and handling any Polo owner should envy. Dismiss it at your peril.

I just swapped my polo for a 1.8 s special mx5, so much more fun and its going to be a dam site better on the track, they dont have to look like hair dressers cars they look sweet slammed on some dish.

Some people need to get over VAG there are so many other options out there that are better.

had one of these before my polo, had 17" fox wheels and a sports steering wheel, honestly handled like a dream!!! dont worry bout this lot!

I thought I was attached to my Mk2, especially with all the mods done to it.

The moment I drove this away from it's previous owner, there was nothing left of the polo in my head.

There just aint any comparison in the way they drive, this MX does it all better and I will be looking forward to it's first track day!

I wouldn't have replaced the polo for a plain ol' 1.6 MX5 - this one's the 1.8 with the bells and whistles underneath - bilstein suspension, braces all round, lightened flywheel, close ratio box, a Limited slip diff (!) all as STANDARD, though funnily enough this one has a pretty swanky stainless manifold and system.

I don't need to do anything to it for it to be quick, which is more than I can say for the Mk2.

By the way, I've heard 'Hairdresser' about 20 times now!

The MX5 is suprisingly good to drive, i've risked my job many a time driving around the yard at work in a MX5.

I have bilstien shocks on mine and an LSD which makes it even more fun (all as standard)

All you need to do is ask yourself what a car is to you.

A fashion accessory?

An indicator of social status?

A means of belonging to an in-group?

A robust, practical and affordable smart looking way of getting about? (the beloved Polo being excellent candidate of this interpretation of what a car is. And that's completely fair enough)

A means of expressing your sexuality so people are absolutely sure?

A way to practice your love of driving?

This is a Polo forum, and absolutely not the place to compare apples to oranges. That said it's nice to see some folk on here appreciating different cars that were never conceived to compete with the car this website is dedicated to, and was in fact designed to fill a completely different role. To be the interpretation of a car that's mentioned last on my list.

The Polo is a smashing car, you don't need to defend it, or it's manufacturer dogmatically. It does that itself, it's proved it itself.

I don't post here anymore because I too have moved to the dark-side , however, the G40 bullshit aside, I look back on my Polos with fondness and nostalgia. Especially my little red Mk2 Coupe S.

I can't believe some of the car snobbery kicking about here, well I guess it's to be expected on a forum intened for Polo owners, who think they're "V.A.G TIL I DIEZZZ, LOL"

The only reason why alot (Not all) of you own a polo, is because they tick the right boxes for young poor first time drivers, Which make up a decent chunk on the forum userbase.

There's no point deniying that Polos are, dare i say it... CRAP, compared to the likes of an MX-5. Just as the MX-5 is crap compared to a Porsche 911.

It's just natural progression, and an MX-5 seems like a logical choice for Danny Lee, he's a single hot male who wants pull some nice jail bait and get the back end out a little with the RWD.
