I have a 1990 Mk2 Polo CL. I have noticed that when the engine is warm the car performs brilliantly and uses almost no fuel (very happy with this), but when its cold the car judders badly under acceleration and power seems to come in a sudden burst when you engage the clutch. It also gets very bad fuel consumption when its being driven like this and it takes a long time to warm up. But when it has warmed up it is fine.

I know its an old car but this doesn't seem right... could it be a problem with the carb?

This can have quite a few causes.

First thing would be to check if all the little hoses are still there. There are two at least. You would probably need to get some pictures from the Internet, a Haynes manual, another car for comparison, or the like.

sounds like the choke isnt working as it should

also if it takes forever to warm up it might have a dodgy thermostat
