to go vented you can use vw2 calipers, like on g40's with 239x20mm vented discs and for master cylinder upgrades you could use a 22.2mm one off mk2 golf gti i think

for something abit extra I've heard about using vauxhall 16v calipers with 256mm vented discs and there is the possability of using a rear disc setup off a golf gti although handbrake cable modifications are needed

I've done a vwII caliper upgrade using polo's carriers with brembo vented g40 brakes and pagid pads, I also ended up changing the rear shoes and cylinders because there was a cylinder leaking. I also fitted goodridge braided hoses for a mk1 golf. Gsf supplied the lot with the club polo discount.

In hindsight I reckon just a good service like the shoes/rear cylinders with maybe ferodo pads would have been enough. There's a passat master cylinder upgrade too but I didn't see the point.

At the end of the day without the servo you've got to put your foot down. Mine seem pretty dam good now but not compared to a modern car. I nearly went through the screen of my dad's Almera.

Other thing to bear in mind is if they're not serviced up with good fluid, they won't work so well.

Personally, I think they're fine, you've just got to use then with conviction.

thats a single circuit servo, mk2's are on dual circuit aren't they?

i picked up a remote single circuit servo from a mini cooper s by mistake for £35 off ebay

they come up every now and then, but unless your polo is running single circuit brakes is pretty pointless

dual circuit remote servos are a pain to find, and fairly pricey to boot!

Polos have dual circuit brakes.

The passat 22.2mm master cylinder won't fit the mk2, you're pretty much stuck with the standard one unless you relocate it. The best solution I've seen is a cut down scirocco transfer bar, which puts the brake master cylinder where it is on LHD cars, above the gearbox, you can pretty much have any size servo you want then within reason, plus a good size master cylinder.

Mk2 brakes are fine with a bit of work. Having well adjusted rears is crucial. Early brakes are atrocious though, get some later calipers that use bigger pads or maybe get some VWII calipers so you can run vented discs. I wouldn't go for bigger brakes just incase they have bigger pistons, which will increase pedal travel.

the type of caliper. They have VWI or VWII written on the side of them. VWII are the ones to use with vented discs, they were fitted to loads of VWs in the late 80s, early 90s.

I have gone for the Mk2 Golf Gti Disk's and Calipers ..

There is a small amount of travel in the pedal due to the large piston size but with the large vented disk's and pads it stops alright when you jump on the breaks ..

As yeti said just give that pedal a bit of bastard and your mk2 will stop ..

I find without a servo you can feel the brakes working better .

then some better discs and pads

the VWII calipers and carriers what are they fitted to?? and most common car to find them on..as i know the carriers are built into the hubs on golfs e.c.t or can i use my existing one

Yes but you just need the VWII calipers which fit to your squares carriers, well they do on mine and mines a 1989 square too. I got my calipers off my 89 mk1 caddy.

I'll also add that this set up fits standard poverty spec 4.5j steels.

when i first jumped in my mk2 after my 6n i rolled right out the guys drive on the road instead of stopping. i think they're fine though you just need to press really hard

A few options

1, You can drive to me in Tewkesbury, and I'll fit it for you.

2, To do it yourself you need to pick a point to mount it, and then run some new brake lines in.

You need a new one from the M/C to the servo for fronts, then the same for rears. Then out of the servo to a T piece, then split for the fronts and another out from the rear port of the M/C to a Tee then split for the rears.

They can be used on any car, all drums all discs or discs front drum rears.

Send the vacuum to a port off the intake manifold or if you are supercharged or do not have enough vacuum due to a lairy cam etc, I can also supply an electric vacuum pump.

I sell them as just the servo, or a servo and fitting kit which consists of a laser cut mounting bracket, unions and a one way valve.

Yes we mainly do them to split screen camper van owners, they are very good, but like you say they're more than the car. I don't have one in my polo, but they're an option.
