been driving back in the eary hours from gfs a few times this week and noticed how much more nippy my 1.4 is the temp never leaves 70 on the clocks , drive it in the day and sits at 90 feeling slugish , what thermostac could i fit to kick in the fan early ? wil running cold dammage my engine

lol.... its due to increased air density(sp) not enginee temp, cool air is more dense

i thought that too (about the dencity of the air)...... never really noticed any differance though

i always get home quicker driving at night.

i always thought was more cos the roads are clear.

would a ram air kit do it ? or mabi make a water jacket around inlet to cool the air

thinking of a cool air pipe to pop just outa sight on my 8v bumper , and a water jacket around my induction pipes to chil the air , or my mini fridge may get dismantled , think I'm guna run a override switch on my rad fan aswell

well horse did just about every thing that cars and farm machinery do these days, the only difference is the modern way is much better/efficient, but if every one had just thought, well it ain't broke so we won't fix/improve it every thing would of stagnated.

Can you explain a water jacket? And why an over ride switch for the fan, wouldn't that just make engine run cold and if the water is cold it means the thermostat wont open to include the radiator anyway, so pretty pointless.

yep 'ram' air filters do the same as a cheap bit of ducting, the air is sucked in by atmospheric pressured, not forced so a waste of money IMO... carbed cars will notice it more as injected cars will 'notice' the differnce better! a crisp morning in the capri probably see's about 3bhp more?

and your engine should be at 90ish once warm whatever the weather, as in the cold the fan is barely used to keep the temp down, just the thermostat to the rad

engines are designed to work around the 90ish mark anyway, so over cooling them is actually detrimental to their health! a lot of race cars actually run higher temps than road cars... not sure if this is for performance or cos it's easier than trying to cool them down?

I think the race car temp is probably because of the higher fuel burning rates, more pressure and general stress and power from the engine and its probably difficult to cool it down!

Its not really engine temp that really matters tho is it? i would have thought just the air temp matters, so theres not much point running the fan earlier, more point in getting colder air from outside the engine bay into the engine to be combusted as like previously said, higher air density = more oxygen per cylinder full of air and fuel = more power on combustion because oxygen is very combustable! i notice it a little on the mk2 1.3, just seems to run smoother and better!

Also heard that slight dampness in the air is good too, not sure of the reasoning tho!

So, in conclusion your better off with cold air feed and maybe some heat shielding in the engine bay!

my fake bmc with the cold air feed right up against the front bumper vent has made a difference, i dont think its from ram air effect, more because its taking cold air from outside rather than the hot air in the engine bay.

i think hotter engines are more eceonomical on fuel... that may be somethin I've just made up tho... lol

A hotter engine means a more complete burn. so yes more effiecient.
