i've got a appointment at half past ten to see the doctor lol, baring in mind its halfords and the doctor surgery is a ten minute walk away lol !

anyway anyone in skeg area just come c me lol

I started working there in August '07 and left a couple of weeks ago but the experience I had when having to phone other stores was enough to back up most of the stories in here...

...However, I will say that you're pretty much left on your own to train yourself; and that the computer system is absurd to navigate, so a lot of the time the staff are left to look stupid by asking questions that shouldn't be necessary, but without which the part is impossible to find.

It's also one of the most frustrating things in the world to spend a 9 hour shift working your ass off while the full-timers plod along at half speed; dealing with customers who laugh and make faces when asked how old their car is; what size engine it has; whether it's their dipped or main headlight that needs replacing...and then when someone who does know what they're talking about finally comes in and treats you with contempt just because they believe all Halfords staff know nothing about cars.

The amount of idiots who come in trying to nick things is also amazing. As well as the sort of people who seem to take a day's enjoyment out of seeing how long they can occupy a member of staff with a stupid question, when it's clear that all the employees are overstretched and have other customers that need seeing to.

So to conclude, I agree that a lot of the staff there are uninterested in taking the time to learn the job and be able to help as best they can but to be honest. for most it is just a part time job and all that matters is the (measly) pay check that comes at the end of every month. It's not particularly rewarding work anyway and the majority of people become fed up of the abuse and call it a day. I was lucky to be a store with people who are passionate about cars and I've made some great friends there too. So I'm glad I did my stint!

whenever i go in wearing my work overalls which are similarlyy coloured to halfords uniforms. i always end up fitting headlamp bulbs or helping customers to buy certain things lol some chap with a ferrari asked me what to wash his maranello with cus atm he uses fairy liquid lol so i got him to buy the best stuff money can buy lol

you pretty much hit the nail on the head there. tbh, i have much more technical knowledge than most of the cocks who come in expecting everyone in there to be retards, but my shitty wage doesnt warrent the effort of actualy sharing it with anyone. at the end of the day what do i care if some self-apointed car expert thinks i know shit all?

an example of this was some fat fok comes in the other day and asks for wiper blades

him: do you have any wiper blades for a golf

me: yep, what year is it?

him: (smirks) why do u need to know that?

me: just for our computer system, make sure you get the right ones

him: phhh, they're all the same aint they cept the legnth?

me: well pretty much but some are slightly different

him: nah dw mate I'm a mechanic they're all the same

i see him go and buy some knowing they're the wrong ones i dont go after him n tell him

he comes back in 10 minuites later.

him: just bought these, they're the wrong ones

me: idiot (under my breath as he walks off)

how are they wrong? he bought normal ones, his ones are aero blades, i had to look back up on the computer to get the right ones again. this happens regularly, i really cant be bothered to deal with people like this

That's amazing! I don't think even VW bothered to make one you know. :|

OK mate if you say so ;);););););););)

when I go to halfords I always make sure I look around myself first- saves a lot of agro! Then if I can't find what I want I usually opt for the trade desk, they tend to know more (at least they did at the one I used to go to).

matt you on about mark from chester halfords?? cuz yea he is a legand my mums bf best mates with him. hes building a darby at mo!

back in the day i went in and found some flowery ponce and asked him where the points were which he told me we don't do anything like that go to a hardware store! as he turned around to walk away i noticed them hanging on the wall behind him, i grabbed them and asked him what the fook he thought these were?

last year i was in there getting some paint mixed, the whole time i stood there - 45 mins - there was 3 of them including the manager on the parts desk were running around, checking part numbers and staring intently at a set of plug leads for a mk1 golf gti. they had sold them to a fella with some plugs but the leads didn't fit, i knew after 2 mins why but after 45 mins and some truely hilarious explanations what the problem could be i piped up and said 'shall i tell you?' to which they looked confused 'try taking the screw on caps off the top of the plugs' some sheepish looks followed as i walked out with my paint thinking what a bunch of eejits!

i was quite looking forward to some halfords bashing, but this thread has made me see the other side! do you really axpect them tho no every part of every car, including the nuances and tricks to them?

I know shitloads about old fords, but modern plastic i know fuck all about, so i would appear to be 'moron' when someone asked me about golf gti HT leads?

i think yes they employ a lot of goobers and they could educate them on stuff like points and the such more, but it's a shitty job, what you can expect!

anyway, my story, i went in and asked for a spark plug gapping tool, and apparently they didn't do em, found it in the end myself, but story seems stupid now :?

there was a really fit girl working in the one down here and she knew her stuff and you could ask her for a thingy and she would know what you were on about and were to find it.

Funniest was listening to a woman in a new merc asking for the bulb fitting service and her turning round and saying its a garage job as you have to remove the bumper. hahaha

Later found out her dad's a mechanic and she now works for him.

Shame honestly used to make visits to halfords more bearable.

my time with halfords guys has mostly been good! although some dude who sold me the wrong light bulbs was amusing! lol

i was after some new side lights and he sold me the wrong ones, then a fitter came out with me and had to go back in to get the rite ones. and at a different store a fitter was trying to replace the reverse bulb on the wrong side after me saying it was on the left. but even now with the buld replaced on the correct side it doesnt work lol!

i can understand people saying that employees dont want to help cock customers, i work in retail and some people are just dicks lol!

but overall! halfords is good if you need little things imo

so it wouldn't occur to you why a ht lead wouldn't fit on a plug to look down the end and see if it is small or large cap fitment? what other reason would there be for it not fitting - it doesn't take a rocket scientist!

the manager of chester halfords is a complete legend he has built a few amazing dubs such as a mk1 g60 and mk1 caddy 2l 16v

he was judging mk1's at UD only guy i speak to when i go to halfraurds

matt

I always see a nice mk1 golf gti parked up at the chester one, looks a very tidy example!
