Jimmy7's 1988 Squareback

Featured Replies

hi guys. I've had this car for a while now (since before new years) but haven't got around to a progress thread until now - so here goes..

Model: 1988 Mk2 squareback

Engine: 1043cc

Suspension: "philJ" 80/60 kit with lowering topcaps

Brakes: Standard

Wheels and Tyres: Standard - 165\55's on front

Exterior Styling: De-Bump stripped, removed rear wiper, replaced rear bumper, rusty petrol flap and a damn good clean

Interior Styling: red clock surround, indian orange flowers on rear view mirror, red trimmed floormats

ICE and Security: standard crap speaker in centre of dash and standard tape player/AMFM radio which is stuck on heart 106.2

Comments: i won this car on ebay with a last minute bid of £51. it was only 9 miles from my house, FSH, one lady owner from new, 46K on the clocks. had lots of scratches and a few dents and didnt look like it had been washed for 19 years. had MOT but no tx and had been sat for 5 months so was a non-starter.

i went to collect this car late at night with philJ and his mate tucker with £40 worth of spares and a new battery to get it started - turned out it only needed a new battery :)

it was a bit rusty and really pink but wasnt bad for £51!! and the service history is pretty impressive.

so far I've polished the car, given it a service, lowered it, taken off the bump strips and rear wiper, replaced the dodgy rear bumper, got new wipers, a new cam cover, fitted 165/55's on the front and managed to rip the exhaust a bit on the bad roads around here.

plans to come - 1.3 engine conversion! G40 exhaust with a straight through centre section, CD player and speakers set up, rev counter clocks fitting and maybe some polished castellet's

more pictures to follow but at the moment I'm at college and dont have all the pictures id like to show.. apologies for poor cameraphone pics..

I'm having trouble with my photobucket account at the moment so pictures are coming in thin.

this is a pic of when i started stripping the car for a clean - the rear bumper was buggered and there was a dent under the drivers side rear light (notice how pink this car was ?!)

looks sweet dude!!! loving the possing lol

cant wait get my top caps on!!! gonna nick one the barrels from my work too!!

thats rocks!

looks good. nice cheap mk2 :-) how does it handle being that low? how does it manage over speed bumps. mines a 60-40 mk3 square not sure if to go lower as i have lots of speed bumps to and from work. drive over 16 a day :?

maybe look for an ABD engine if i was you, 1.4 more torque, use a GT cam DMTL carb then you will have a fun nippy motor. well better than a 1.0

Oh GT exhaust system would be a good upgrade.

looks awesomeeee :p

looks clean mate :D, I'm thinking of buying one for a daily  i need to save the mk4 from being used everyday

thanks dude :) its handles pretty well, but i dont go very fast in it as its only the 1 litre :(

i go over a few speed bumps but its only the centre box that scrapes (which is now badly blowing) and sometimes the downpipe. but when i get the G40 backbox, a straight through pipe will be fitted :) id say 60/40 is nice and low without being too low, but i quite like scraping :D

i did toy with the idea of gettgin a GT lump for it, but i think ill just keep it simple with the 1.3 of the same age, it does have a weber carb on it at the moment though.

tahnks for the comments !! :D

yes... i like it, lol lovely once polished and lowerd. well done

More details on the lowness please!

With the top caps is this basically lowered 90/70?

is the back set at 60 or 80 matey? and i recon it looks fucking cool :) i wouldnt change alot about it to be honest! except get some back to black on the bumpers!

  • Author

thanks guys!

yeah with topcaps on it is around 90mm at the front and the rear shocks have been set to 70mm as i need to carry passengers at times so didnt want to go all the way down :)

the rear bumper is nearly new, the front is hideous though and held on by the wiring for the indicators and two tiny self-tappers! but a new one will be on when the engine goes in as its comng off of the same car ;)

what size tyres are you running?

  • Author

silly balloon tyres on the rears (155/70 maybe?) and 165/55 pirelli's on the front :)

any rubbing issues?

  • Author

nah the rears are standard and it didnt make any difference when i dropped it - and the fronts are all good as I've taken out the inner plastic wing things.

bit of an update, I'm selling the car to a friend and he wanted some specifications done to it, mostly the colour change - it now has a 1.3 engine in it too and just needs the finishing touches to make it roadworthy:
