Hi peeps, have bought a mk4 golf 1.6 automatic for my mum recently, 75k on the clock. the car has been serviced a month ago and judging by the oil its clear so thats fine.

But my may concern is the timing belt has not been done, as the previous owner had the car serviced the fan belt, oil filter, oil has been changed and the mechanic there told her it doesnt need to be done yet. As i know average is 60k that every car should have the timing belt changed. Been quoted 350-400 this will inc tensioner, belt etc if i was to change it, is that charging alot?

My other concern is the headgasket, as i have a polo i know the oil cap when taken of have the white stuff this is caused by condensation i have been told. The golf is the same has that white stuff, checked the oil dip no sign of white spots, also the tempurature stays half way so thats fine, so does that mean the headgasket doesnt need to be done?

If there is no sign of the timing belt being done in the service history then I would really get it done just in case. Timing belt changes are also done by the amount of years as well as mileage. I think its something like 8 years but I'm not too sure on that.

As for headgasket sounds like its just condensation, unless your losing water or notice something with the oil. Could always get it tested to make sure.
