The Install Thread You've All Been Waiting For

Featured Replies

this may take quite a while to write

first off i will not bore you with how to remove your doorcards as i'm sure most of you would of had them off at some point

the main 12v+ supply can be picked up from the ignition barrel and it is a thick red wire

earth can be taken from any existing earth point behind the drivers footwell carpet

so here goes

step 1

with the drivers door open and doorcard removed push the door lock into the closed position

21032009772.jpg

now push the door lock pin down to the lock position

21032009774.jpg

then get you clamp from you motor kit and fit it as low down as you can

21032009776.jpg

now fit the rod to the motor and push it up into the same point as the lock pin

now line up the motor on the door skin making sure you have not tightened up the clamp on the rod(this helps to make sure the motor can line up square on the door)

21032009777.jpg

make sure the motor is in its shortest position and the rod is vertical (you will see that there is a slight kink in the rod this is to allow the rod to pass over the door handle rod without fouling it)

when you have it lined up correctly you can mount it by drilling 2 3mm holes in the doorskin that line up with the motor holes

now you need to run your cables into the door

if it is a central locking kit with a five wire motor then you will need to run the five cables into the drivers door and connect them colour for colour

usually as follows

blue

green

black

brown

white

copy this procedure for both the front doors

rear doors to follow

rear doors

push the lock rod down first

the clamp needs to be connected in this position

21032009783.jpg

the rod will require a bend to be put on it to be able to connect to the lock rod

fit the clamp to your locking motor rod first then you will find it reasonably easy to clamp it to the cars lock rod

the motor goes in this position making sure it is fitted again in its shortest position

21032009784.jpg

you will see i have had to use 2 metal straps and the rear doors (if you have them use the 2 wire motors

thats basically how you do it

if you need more pics or info please ask

hope this helps

cheers

good post, i was just going to put together a similar one after installing this kit in the missus mx5. saved me the job!

  • 2 weeks later...

hi mate sorry for my stupidity but where are the coloured cables conected to? and how do you connect both sides of the car together?? do you connect the spare wires (not live/earth) to each other (ie connect the blue drivers door wire to blue passenger side door etc)?

Edited by Pepe

good guide mate, will be in use soon!!!

Could I just add to the guide that the door plug may need drilling to fit the wires thru it, easy to do and make the whole process easier, I can add picture of what I mean if anyone wants

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm just about to re-try this, before i got the motors installed, but was at a loss as to how to pass the wires from the door to the car... anyone?

have installed the motors, now am about too wire the rest of the stuff up, what i reckon is the hardest part, and not covered by this guide!

I ended up drilling my doors to get the wiring in, bit of a gash job but I couldn't see any other way... should put some grommets in there or something I guess

same, I've now covered mine in a smaller vaccuum pipe and it looks alot tidier! dont leave your wires exposed they will deteriorate faster

i did not put a wiring guide as surely the central locking kit has fitting instructions

however if you need it

12v+ can be found at the fuse box and will be a thick red wire

earth use an existing earth location again behind the fuse box or in the drivers footwell there is a bolt

indicators are a black/green and a black/white and can be found at the indicator switch

no thanks mate, its a great guide, and yeah it does have instructions. the only thing boggling me was getting the wires from the door to the car! don't wanna drill my poor little car lol

Sorry to bring back an old thread!

I cant seem to find any wires coming from the fusebox, and i cant find the earth cable in the footwell

Anyone fancy making a quick/detailed guide on how to wire it? seeing as its the hardest bit to do on the fitting?

Take the drivers side glove box out and look at the fuse box then root around on te right hand side of it and there should be a groin wire bolted there and there's a thick red wire at the back! Do a search I have done a guide sort of thing before!
