I really can't see how they are so tragicially slow, Same power as a 6n2 gti and not a massive amount heavier.

Any other similar cars/options which i havnt meantioned. Pref. VAG.?

And in regards to getting a G, i really can't afford to own such a money pit..

Never driven a 1.8T A3, but the TT with the same engine doesn't hang about 0-60 in 5-6secs?

the a3 aka mk4 golf isn't a great deal heavier than the polo but feels really big and wallowy, you can cruise for hours around town and motorways all day long without bother especially if you get a model with decent interior.

unless you are running 250+ bhp in the a3 / golf 4 platform it will never feel fast.

the polo is quite disappointing power wise, you have to rev the nuts off it to get the power out of it and for a polo is quite heavy, it's a bit more fun around the twisty's but still not a great handling car. plus the fact there will always be the niggle in the back of your mind waiting for the gearbox to blow up!

depends if you want speed or luxury really.

and i wouldnt spend 2k on a mk2 golf unless it was seriously sick. i said spend a bit on the golf then the rest on insurance

140bhp vs 172bhp in a lighter better handeling hatch. The Clio will always make mince meat out of a 6n2 unless driven by a muppet.

I wouldn't be too happy looking at a £2k 172 till you get to the £2.5k mark, bit like the GTi.

1. take the vag (still don't understand that term, hope i used it right!) blinkers off and look else where! my mate has a clio sport and it's pretty good!

2. take the fwd blinkers off, get something old skool and driven from the rear

its obvious innit get a mini!

I say get a GOOD GT. Drop it on some nice wheels and save the rest incase anything goes wrong. Cheap on insurance, good step up in speed; especially for an 18 yr old. Jobs a gooden and lots of fun!

Get something small and nippy. Thought about S1 or S2 Peugeot 106 rallye?

correct. mk3 golf vr6, some good coilies and decent tyres for 2k would sort me reet out.

some clean vr's around the 1500 mark...

either that or a well-looked after GT (i know whewre there is one for sale soon) and save the rest up for a holiday or evem more mods....

x2 rather have a ph-quick then a 6n2 Gti any day, quicker and rarer

Mhmh, We'll living in cornwall alot of my driving is in little lanes, and driving to college everyday with 5 lads in the car, the little 1 litre is soo bad on fuel. Always working the gears between 3-5k revs

Also do a bit on a duel carrageway, for 40 mins or so. Which case cruzing at like 70 the car is at 4k revs +.

So a bigger engine. Keep the revs alot lower etc. Petrol isnt going to be a masive amount different.

I'm starting to think the answer lies within something TDI

Mk3 Golf 8v GTI sounds about right for you

They are ace on fuel if you don't thrash them, you don't need to thrash them because all the "power" is low down. They aren't quick by any stretch but nice enough to drive.

Or... you could get a nice Bora 2.0 8v for that money. They are lovely to drive but again not fast!

mk2 if you want an 8v!

Avoid any car with an N/A 1.8 20V. The engine is SHIT! I literally mean that, I sold my GT to get an A3 because I wanted some refinement. The car itself was ok, but the engine was a complete bag of wank. No torque at low revs so the only way to make it go at all was to thrape its arse, and then the fuel economy just went out of the window.

VW themselves admitted it was a crap engine when they quietly dropped it and went back to the good old 2.0 8V with a crossflow head. The only decent 1.8 20V is one with a turbo bolted to it.

Incidentally, I put up with the A3 for all of 6 weeks then managed to wangle a straight swap for a Corrado 2.0 8V. The Corrado is slower in all respects on paper but feels so much faster. Plus the drive is a whole load more fun, and, well its a Corrado :)

If you've got £2k to spend there are far better alternatives. If you're not great with cars then something like a sorted GT would be a great buy, you can get a minter for £1k, which leaves you a grand change, and the cars themselves are so simple that you can teach yourself a lot about them just by owning one. They're very reliable and are a lot of fun even as standard. Just watch the handling Or spend some ££ on a subframe and wishbone kit.
