6n Engine Conversion to 1.6 16v GTI

Featured Replies

Alright there people

right i need a bit of advice....my current 1.6 8v engine doesn't quite do justice to the quality of the bodywork, so I'm looking to source the parts and have the engine changed

I'm looking at putting a polo gti engine in if this is possible, i believe it was a 1.6 16v ?possibly or i may opt for the 1.4 16v 6n engine, i just want something that does a bit more justice.

I'm not after suggestions, so know 1.8t suggestions, as i cannot afford it...the labour is going to be carried out by friends and will cost me beer and training rather than money so my only costs will be in sourcing the parts.

now thats my question, what will i need to complete this, if someone can detail a list as accurate as possible i will be very grateful to them

many thanks

sean

1.6 GTI converson is slightly more difficult and costly to do...Heres your list:

COST:

GTI setup- £700-1100 for everything inc. serviceables for the engine

1.4 16v setup-£300-900 for everything inc. serviceables for the engine

The above does not include brakes.

I have done both these conversions-

1.6 GTI into a mk4 (my car but it used EVERYTHING from the gti as i initially had it prepped for a 1.8T)

1.6 GTI into a mk5 8v

1.4 16v into a mk4 8v 1.4.

PLEASE NO PM'S- I answer too too many questions on these conversions... A MOD SHOULD STICKY THIS! :-)

1.6 GTI engine- code: ARC or AVY available in either polo gti or lupo gti. 125bhp standard.

Gearbox,

Exhaust manifold+downpipe+both lambda probes (before and after cat)+cat and exhaust system.

All engine mounts (dogbone mount on rear of box is the same).

Full engine harness (injector harness/throttle body/inlet sensor).

Full engine bay loom (includes connectors for headlamps, indicators+wing indicators, washer bottle, etc etc)

Full interior wiring loom (this will need to be stripped of non essentials if you plan on keeping your current fusebox and run this one alongside it just for the engine to run)

Pedal box needs to be changed as this engine runs fly-by-wire throttle (sensors on pedal and TB instead of a cable)

Ecu,

Clocks (won't be a straight fit into the 6N dash),

Key with chip inside,

Immobilisor transponder box (located behind dash above fusebox in a gti),

Immobilisor coil reader (located around the ignition switch and connects to above box).

GTI fuel pump (also not a straight forward fit due to the difference in fuel tanks- will require modding or use a 16 mk4 pump! they run same bar pressure BUT the fuel sender is the opposite way round on the gti pump so your fuel gauge on clocks will run backwards (when full it will say empty etc)

Radiator+3 speed fan,

Power steering front hose needs to be changed as the 6N2 16v runs different to the 6N 8v.

ADVISORY: change the waterpump for a metal impeller one, do a cambelt change and change the AUX belt depending on condition. Also best to change the clutch if it is using the factory standard as this causes more stress to the gearbox- potentially fatal on GTI boxes reaching 40-50k which is when they let go. Also change the thermostat in the thermostat housing. (might be an idea to swap out the fuel filter for a new one)

1.4 16v CONVERSION (the easier and cheaper option)

1.4 16v AFH engine produces 100bhp.

1.4 16v gearbox CWX (common code)

Exhaust manifold+downpipe+both lambda probes (before and after cat)+cat and exhaust system.

All engine mounts (dogbone mount on rear of box is the same).

Full engine harness (injector harness/throttle body/inlet sensor).

Full engine bay loom (includes connectors for headlamps, indicators+wing indicators, washer bottle, etc etc)

Full interior wiring loom

Change the fan (also 3 speed)- your 1.6 radiator will be fine.

Clocks are a straight swap,

Key with chip inside,

Immobilisor transponder box (located under the steering column cowling on all mk4's),

Immobilisor coil reader (located around the ignition switch and connects to above box).

16v fuel pump (might be an idea to swap out the fuel filter for a new one)

Power steering front hose needs to be changed as the 6N 16v runs different to the 6N 8v.

ADVISORY:change the waterpump for a metal impeller one, do a cambelt change and change the AUX belt depending on condition. Also best to change the clutch whilst everything is out.

BRAKES- you know the drill- you need 16v front hubs, caliper carriers and calipers as they run 256mm front brakes not like 8v 239mm which have a caliper carrier and hub together as one piece.

Drive shafts, subframes (gti one has extra downpipe hangers), wishbones etc are all the same between these cars.

I have a mk5, which initally came with the 1.4 16v 75bhp engine, after a recent engine conversion it now has the 1.6 16v GTI engine, and i gotta say the extra 50bhp makes all the difference, i now feel safe to over take people!!

In total the conversion cost me about £900 that included the engine and all the servicing bits ect. only thing i didnt need was the brakes as mine already had the GTI ones.

It all depends on what kinda money you have, and if you can be bothered with the hassle.

it may be cheaper just to buy the valver or GTI instead though as another option, as car prices are going down and down at the moment.

It is easier to perform a GTI conversion on a mk5 like Hollys because it already has the fly by wire pedal box, fuel pump i remember had the same part no. and only the drivers side mount requires changing. the loom plugs straight into the back of her fusebox and the connectors are all colour coded UNLIKE the mk4 16v depending on year. 98+ mk4's had a fusebox that resembled both the mk4 and mk5.

people you are legends...dubbprince you can be a god as youve just answered all my questions and helped me out, i reckon ill still be looking at the 1.6 gti as that'll be more long term for the car :-D

holly, there is no way I'm getting rid of my car, its the glx so has all the mods and cons and has had loads of bodywork and a full respray, as i said though, the engine is a total let down at 75bhp, even modded I'm not gonna be more than 100bhp :-(

mods you need to sticky this!!!

Sean...if your serious about it mate, you'll be best off stripping the interior loom of a mk5 then. The rest will come easily...pedal box is a bit of a nightmare with the steering column in the way but you can do it.

Best to get everything before you start it...i'm running a VR6 radiator which i got off german ebay and twin pacet fans...the car has the usual mods:

BMC, decat, full s/s exhaust system...

I think you'll be pleased with the bhp increase thats for sure... :-D

can anyone give me any info. i have a 1.4 16v 6n I've bought a 2001 gti bottom end i have th ehead off my car atm and was wanting to know if i change the bottom end to a 1.6 gti and use the 1.4 head and cams etc will it work i know that the head studs on the 1.6 gti are thinner but what timming belt would i use does the 1.6 have a bigger stroke or just a slightly bigger bore I've herd its been done before and i want my car back on the road asap i could just rebuild my 1.4 and have it back on the road on sunday but what do i really need to do to use the 1.6 gti bottom end on my car. do i just sleeve the head and buy a new set of 1.6 gti head studs and head gasket and are the timing belts the same for both cars can anyone help me with this please

bit of a late reply...and i see this never got pinned...i'm still getting questions via pm. MODS...WAKE UP! :x

John- best person to ask would be Jez on here, as he did this. I have taken apart a GTI engine and a 1.4 so have a few pics on my site:

www.picturetrail.com/dubbprince

You'll notice the waterways in the bottom ends of both engines will be different...not sure how much though. As for the GTI- yes it has a slightly longer stroke.

I'm not too clued up on this conversion but was going to attempt it for a mate. The cambelt set up is almost identical...only difference i could see is that the gti has holes for locking the cams and the AFH 1.4 head has very small dimples instead.

Looking at the pics on the mk4 gti conversion,

You have no air flow meter???

How did you overcome this?

Also the hose to the left of the cda is open ended. Is this just a breather hose?

I'm doing this conversion on a mk2 and would like to use standard inlet mani, but without afm, just as space is really limited.

Cheers

Winston
