Not really and especially not in standard form. Once modded they can be quite quick, and they handle half reasonably out the box, but they certainly aren't what I'd call fun.

i had a complete dog of one, but someoe had played with the fuelling, pretty nippy for a diesel once you get rolling... still not gt smiles tho, changing gear at 5k is gay.

keep the GT unless you want fuel economy imo, most have been run into the ground and there not really sporty to drive at all.

I used to get 300miles/tank out of my GT when ragging the absolute shite out of it anyway, which is 40ish to a gallon, so I can't see the difference in pence per mile being that different, could also put a longer box on your GT.

yeah, i'm looking for one, sub 130k on clocks? not an easy find. :x

it more because i love the mk2 golf look. you can make them faster then a gt.

not loads faster tho, and defo a less-usable power band... when you play with boost an fuelling you get 2500 rpm of power, maybe even less, the lag is huge and the economy drops shitloads... stanton's tuned GTD ran 200+ lb/ft and 150bhp with ALOT of work, barely did 30mpg and had a shit power band... as a fast car they dont make sense, a slight tweak and they are a great daily tho...

in that case buy a mk2 GTI with a fucked engine then buy my GTD lump off me, all the sportiness you don't get with a GTD but with GTD engine, and you could use a 2 door GTI rather than having to roll in a four door.

Or just get an 8v GTI and leave it as it is, an infinitely better car

i have had 2 of them..

as said not as quick top end of 110 at a push with 0-60 on par with 8b gti i reckon, but if you do the usual suspension and brake upgrades (gtd has non vented 239`s which are shite) you can get the same handling, and rock away at 45mpg booting it everywhere.

its dead easy to fiddle with the fueling and boost - also old skool tricks like the injection pump throttle cable stop and bending the throttle pedal work a treat.

you can fit a bigger pump and injectors linked with a FMIC for a bit more fueling and then maybe a turbo mod - the engines are pretty much bomb proof (one of mine had 100k, the other had going on 240k)

the added bonus of bosh fuel pump means you can "recycle your fuel" , waste oil, parafin, veg oil, bio deisel, jet fuel ... take your pick.

the pnly downside is the 5 doors, and the mince tax for RARETY!! wouldn`t mine making a 1.9 non pd 3 doors using an 8v gti as a base to be honest.

as per oringinal question id say they are fun as its cheap motoring with old skool looks & BLACK SMOKE cant really go wrong
