I thaught i had problems with mine with rust on the sill and a patch on the door ...

Iff you end up braking the car i will take the rear lights off you mate :)

Would be a shame i know to break as there arnt too many Mk2 saloons around however its not in anyway going to be worthwile all that effort .. Peope scrap Mk1's with rust like that ..

Admittedly, its 'only a polo' but that welding is a weeks work at most.

If I was getting it all done at a bodyshop then it really wouldn't be worth it. but as I'm doing it all myself its all good. Gives me something to do.

I'm not doing it to sell on and make money back. I'm doing it for a car to keep for a few years. It will be a constant project/weekend toy

Nearly got a new rear panel sorted anyways, so that's like all of the rust on the rear fixed in one shot

Exactly Stevie. Being able to stand back and look at it once its finished, then go for a blast down some country lanes will be an amazing feeling

And hopefully getting some quick times down at the pod will be awesome :p

Oh and as for the rear lights, I'm after some myself, it failed an MOT on the drivers side brake light, got a chunk missing so doesn't fully glow red. Nearly got some off a MK3 loon on here but someone beat me to it :(

Will just be keeping an eye out at scrappies etc, got a long way to go before I need lights in it again

People tell me I'm crazy for wanting to save my mk2 loon, as it's in a worse state than yours (and thats before i start punching holes through all the rott!) but if it's something you want to do and it's not going to cost a fortune then go for it!

Shame to hear a lot of people calling it a pile of shit, my own Derby wasn't a million miles from this sort of state when i was given it and that turned out alright. Its a good opportunity to show off your bodywork skills at the very least, you enjoy the ride fella.

There is a set on ebay that never sells. or one at least with buy it now of about 30quid

Not sure if mk3 lights will fit tho..but i guess they could be made to fit

The lights look exactly the same. I just assumed they did as the 2 cars are pretty much the same.

And yeh, I've seen the ones on Ebay, its the opposite side to the one I need :(

If I find 2 pairs in the scrappies ill have um both. Stevie (stealth) has 1st dibs on um though.

I know where people are comign from saying "scrap it" but its not about is it worth repairing, its about having something to practive your work on and see what you can do yourself.

Not what alot seem to think along the lines of - "It will cost more than its worth if i take it to my local bodywork shop if they would eventake on the work so just scrap it"

Found a cool switch, not sure exactly what it does but the car turns over but wont start. so its not stopping the elec. and it cuts out if u flick it when running. Home brew fuel cut off? only thing I can think of as it still turns over.

Kinda bored now, need the petrol tank out to do any more grinding back cus its all by the filler neck. Need a load of money to buy myself a welder and need a load of new panels and random bits of metal.

Got to get to VW sometime soon and get prices on all the panels i need

And I want to hunt a few MK2's down in scrapyards and hack a few repair bits off them. Grinder and generator FTW!

When I start stripping the bay ill follow the wires back n see where it leads.

That switch under the dash is a keeper too I think when its done. Simple but it would fool a lot of people. Even if it is just mates trying to naff off with your car.

Think I need an entire passenger side rear quarter panel. Do VW even do these still?

Mine needs that much work its not worth trying to fix it. The arch is gone, the rear bit has random bits of metal welded to it and lots of filler, its savagely dented and flexed near the door. Will be a fun yet extremely scary panel to replace i think, and probably cost more than double what I paid for the car
