i quite like phase 1 172s clios, they are fast and handle well

same especially the phase ones, but insurance is a killer on them. i think its either going to be a 106 gti or a 205 1.9 as they are around the same price and insurance group

Lotta crap talking here....I cant beleive people saying you can find a clean starlet GTT or glanza for less than 3k, most ones I've looked at are around 5k for frigs sake!!

I had a punto gt, nothing but bother, lovely interior but the head was scrap, lost lots of money on it. Look great though!

R5 will eat gearbags at big power, and the chances of getting a clean standard low miler for 2k are ZERO

Clio 16v would be nice, quick, subtle and cheap as chips. Maybe even a williams?

Id get a 205, or save a bit longer and get an MX5

Starlet turbo wins tbh, you can get a nice ep82 starlet for under 2 grand easy. My bro just sold his 340bhp ep82 for 6k though at the other end of the scale! Reliable cars too, pretty bombproof, 1.3 16v turbo so cheap tax, big engine performance.

Starlet GT because it's the only thing forced induction that you'd get a clean(ish) example of for that price, if you're lucky, whereas like you said, stuff like Punto GT's and R5 GTT's you've got no chance.

Pug GTi's and some VW's would be easier to find decent examples of for that budget, but personally i would try and search out a Starlet as they're great little cars.

You can get a decent specced one for 2k all day long, stretch to 2500 and you'll get a slightly later one with less miles.

So long as its got breathing mods and a set of decent cams you'll keep up with lightly tuned G's no problems. Just beware of lifting off in the bends lol.

not really mate a glanza a gt turbo are very different. GT Turbo you can get for 2k easily but glanza's are around 4.5k for a great one. and yes they win hands down :p

Glanza's are still pricey at the mo, so gt turbo's (ep82) are the one to get, they look much better then the glanza i think also.

I think the Glanza is prettier, but as you say, they're more expensive.. you'd be much safer buying a £2k GT than a £2k Glanza, if there's like 4-5 years between them, there's a reason they're the same price lol.

the glanza v is far better looking with a more up to date interior, also it has an extra blade in the the turbo to make it spool up quicker and is generally a better car. glanzaswere only made from 96-99 and in 98 they bought out a facelift which had different rear lights, different interior, more aggressive front bumper and a high level brake light in the spoiler. some rare options were a snow pack (better radiator and underseal) and a recaro interior (very rare). id take i glanza anyday

But i reckon glanzas look too much like a micra, ep82 has a more sleek design i think, each to there own though a?! Plus i know the gearbox ratio in an ep82 is better (so my bro tells me) and i think they are slightly lighter too. Either starlet is good though tbh.

Look on piston heads now..... there's about 2 or 3 atm that are near/are 2 grand and they are high milers.

Phase 2 172 is slow compared to the Phase 1, you want a 182 (cup for the hardcore ) for the phase 2 and they are still mostly well over 4K.

Like I said, for 2K it won't be in great nick. Spend 3-3.5 and you'll have a much better motor.

Clio Williams?

Just found reason. 1.9 engines have a longer stroke so the 1.6s are perky and more revvy whereas 1.9 is more torquey. Hope this helps. Depends what you're looking for but for fun factor the 1.6 seems best.

Might as well get the TD then as it's faster than the 1.6.

going to have to go witha 205 GTi i think, hopefully a 1.9 is insurance allows as they seem pretty well priced and people highly rate them, that black one is lush, shame that he sheared off a manifold bolt!

Sheared off mani bolt would be an easy fix little bit of a bastard but nothing insanely bad.

One thing to look out for is that the rear beam can seize. No idea what this actually refers to but i know that it costs between £300-£400 to fix. Something to think about.

Apart from that i hear they are pretty bomb proof.

The rear beam sezing is because it's a torsion bar, and they're getting scarce parts to find these days.
