Hi all,

Just a quick question, I was driving down a dual carriageway tonight and noticed a traffic police car (T5 estate) parked in a layby, I passed him at approx 80mph indicated speed.

The next layby had another T5 estate in it, I passed him at approximately the same speed. I then noticed he signalled and moved out into the traffic.

My junction was the next one, so obviously I took it as usual. The policeman had no blue lights or sirens, as I was checking for them in my mirror!

I was wondering, do they have to stop you at the scene? I'm probably just being paranoid!

My guess is that the first cop has mentioned to the second cop that i've been going a bit quick, then sent the second cop out to clock me over a distance?

If you were doing 80mph indicated, you were probably doing about 75mph true speed. I doubt you have anything to worry about; probably just coincidence he pulled out.

i got pulled over 42 in a 30 but was let off because i was driving fast but safe and said i was going to collage at the time

you'll be fine matie i reckon!! :) i have had them come past me before at around that speed, to be honest.. imagine if they started pulling over everyone who did 75-80 on main roads? it would just be crazy!? if you do 70 then u tend to get taken over by loads of people dont you? so as much as it is naughty and i dont support the idea of speeding majorly.. i think a lot of people trundle upto 80 on dual carrage ways and your fine! :)

If the dual carrigeway has a central reservation and no speed limit signs its 70mph like a motorway.

Really not liking the variable speedo in the golf tho... wish it had an old skool manually driven one!

so long as they were not in "speed camera mode" or what not, you'll be alright...... probably they were both on tea break or looking out for proper speeders

after seeing the first T5 i'd have backed off to 70 though, then if they had come after you at least the fact that you slowed down to the legal limit show's your paying attention..... "speedo read high" as an excuse probably won't be taken well by plod

I've always thought they will let you away with quite alot if your not stupid, I've been overtaken by traffic cops while sitting around 80. And I've seen on some of these tv programs clocking people closer to 90 and not doing anything. If your doing 80 or over sitting on someones bumper or undertaking or anything else stupid thats when they get a bit pissed I think.

And the thing is an indicated 80 on most cars is like 75 really, and to be honest how is that any more dangerous than 70? If anything happens you'll still be able to pull up in less distance than the highway code says you should from 70.

dnt worry mate ther not norm bothered unless you are doing 85 + as that makes you are true speed about 80...

Would have probably been ANPR. One reads the plate and checks the PNC for no tax/test/insurance, owner being a dodgy geezer etc, then the second one pulls away immediately so is moving when the suspect vehicle goes past, making stopping the suspect vehicle easier.

The only way a traffic car can measure speed is by using VASCAR, where, as they say, they follow you over a set distance, so you could be right, but more likely I'd say ANPR flagged up another car.

Hsving driven a couple of ex-polce v70's, it's pretty safe to say that if they wanted to catch up with you, they would have done.

it could just be conincidence that there were 2 traffic cars in consecutive lay bys...i wouldnt worry too much, 99.9% of times, if your gonna get done for something, they will do it there and then, as after the incident it starts to fall in grey areas for them too, (all about scene of the crime etc and paperwork - all a ball ache when you have to do it too!!)

as for police and speeding...I've had many an incident where I've been passed by a cop car...the other night i was waiting for the g/f, i was just about too pull away and a cop car passed me at like 50 in a 30 zone with cars parked both sides..

and also, when i went down to kent, i got over took by a cop car and i was doing 90 lol

in both instances, there were no blue lights or sirens, i guess they're only human too

i over took a non marked cop car doing 85, the copper just looked at me then turned back to the road

dont think they are to bothered unless your doing somert stupid like being 11mm from the car in front, like a 911 was to me untill the he got pulled over :-D
