Hey guys i just brought i polo wth a failed gearbox, which its a project for me when we got it hope we tried to start it............

We fitted a new battery which is holding 12.6v so all fine there.

We thought it might have been the starter motor so we replaced that with another one but still no joy.

THE PROBLEM IS I PUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION I GET ALL DASH LIGHT THEN GO TO START IT AND IT DOES NOTHING DOESNT EVEN TURN OVER I CAN HEAR THE RELAY CLICKING UNDER THE DASH BUT GOT NOTHING.

so yesterday we tried to bump start it and it started fine but then once we turned the engine off and tried to start it again we had nothing.

Hopefully someone can help us with this as we dont know what to try,

sounds like in imobiliser problem the engine runs for 3 secs or so then cuts out after that you can just hear the relays clicking change the ignition barrel and key/imobiliser see if that does it

your battery should be 12.9-13.6volts ideally..

have you tried another battery, porta pack or jump start

Its a brand new battery 2 days old

and the alarm is switchig off ok as it works n a button and if i put the key in which the immob working i get no dash lights until i press the key fob then the dash lights come on

and the engine does not run at all as it wont crank over....

what if you connect direct to starter motor

how do i do that mate?

turn ignition on then short the connections on the solenoid with screw driver.

or check that your solenoid feed goes +12v when you turn the key, you may find you have a duff earth on the engine/box

well it has defo got voltage at the starter as it sparked

but did it turn over when it sparked ha...

get your multimeter and check if you get +12v on the small wire when you turn the key...

possibly the ignition switch is knackered. What polo are we talking about here?

good old engine earth point?

try bridging the main + on the starter to terminal the thin (usually black) wire goes to carefully.

i linked some cable from the +12v on the starter to the battery and it started 1st time just wanna thank everyone who helped with this but one more thing...............

is is a ignition switch if so where is it and where can i get one

its a 1.6 6n polo

can someone tell me if it is the ignition switch and where about i will find this iv had a uick look but not sure what I'm looking for.

i've got one but it's complete steering column, ignition, key and immobiliser box.

to be honest mate, it sounds like an immobiliser problem.

is your key chipped?

cant be cos the imobisser is disarming though buddy

and no key aint chipped

you get many different types of immobiliser, i'm talking non factory.

obviously the problem you are having is power is not coming from the ignition switch to the starter motor.

this could be for a few reasons,

a break in the wire

worn ignition switch

or an immobiliser

some alarm fitters fit a 'breaker' or 'link' into the starter wire. basically they cut the wire and it runs through the immobilser. until the immob is deactivated the power from ignition to starter is cut so it won't turn over.

if you take off the shroud under the steering then you can trace all the wires to see if it has a 'breaker' in it. if it has simply cut it out and rejoin the original wires.
