how will that help if you are trying to test ignition end not starter end

well i tested the starter and it didnt have any voltage when cranking!!

so now you need to test where the wire is coming out of the back of the ignition switch. if you're making 0 volts there then it's the switch, if you are making 12+ volts then you know it's a wire / immob issue.

sorry to sound dumb is the ignition switch the big round plug on the back of the barrel and do i unplug the harness I'm nt sure how to test these sort of things sorry buddy

if your multi meter has pointed tips just probe the wire. you need to leave it plugged on, the actual switch is built into the ignition barrel.

the wire that goes to the starter will be one of the ones that go to that, i can't remember which one of the top of my head though. only one should go 12+ volts when you turn the key to the start position the 0 volts when you let go.

you should be able to get the tester up the plug where the wires go in.

Ok iv just tested the switch and one cable goes +12v on assorery and then when u crank the engine it goes to 0v

what does this mean?

Switch at fault?

right guys iv started to strip down the interior to get to this ignition switch............

Iv removed the steering wheel and indicator stalks and left with the colum and the barrel but how do you remove the barrel iv taken out the special little screw on the side but it wont budge any ideas just to help me with this part..............................

What mk is your Polo? I changed an ignition switch on a mk2, but probably completely different set-up if you've got a 6n?

Either go on e-bay and buy a second-hand Haynes manual, which should tell you how to remove the ignition barrel from the column or alternately post the age/mk on here and maybe someone with a Haynes manual can give you instructions.

To get my ignition barrel out, I had to remove a really difficult nut (doesn't look much like a nut as quite close to the column). I gripped it with mole grips and then used a bearing puller to pull the mole grips which pulled the nut off. That freed the ignition barrel as far as I can remember.

Just got home and opened my Haynes manual. It says that in order to remove the steering lock (where the ignition switch is located) - remember your car may be different to mine, you need to make sure that the ignition key is inserted to ensure that the lock is in its release position.
