me and jimmi spent the day grinding & sanding to take the rust out of my rear arches. then we got a bit carried away and decided to flare the arches.

you should have got them welded and not used fibreglass its guna crack withing you are next drive

It ain't finished yet. Stop panicing its gonna look fine! It it cracks it cracks and we'll weld it up. Besides its already been driven and it ain't cracked yet, what the hell do you guys think fibreglass is for? Pudding? It ain't golden syrup you know!

So far this has cost about £15 - £20. How many bodyshops do you know that can do this kind of work for £20? It still needs sanding with the orbital sander, refibreglassing, sanding again, filling, sanding and then the entire panel repainting.

Well yeah. I guess the fibreglass is better than continuously rotting metal. I don't think Al plans to sell the car.

I'd be wary that you didn't cut enough of the rust out of the outer arch panel to begin with. I know from experience that you have to cut it right out and start fresh if you want to keep the rot out and those arches were in pretty bad shape to start with. How did a VW get that bad anyway? Looks worse than my MR2!!

I knew there was rust but just never had the drive to attack it, until I turned around and there was jimmy with a sander and one bare arch... then we just thought f**k it

Dude, all the ingrain rust was ground out inside and out of the arch, so chill. I ground past the rust and onto the good metal where there was no rust at all. If you can see dark patches on the metal then thats where the grinder has burnt the metal from it getting so hot!

It may LOOK worse than the MR2 but at least the shell underneath is solid! :-D

Thats not bad for 20 quid, I'm getting the rust removed from my rear arches while it's in the bodyshop and it's costing quite a bit more than that :(

i shall be keeping an eye on this, my m8 is thinking of attempting this on his breadvan soon, fair play for giving it a go & i hope it all goes to plan =)
