They're used to cleanse your paintwork where normal washing or polishing cannot. You add water to the panel and rub the clay against the panel, this lifts any contaminants or dirt. Check youtube for videos on how to clay a car.

In all honesty, the process of claying a car makes a huge difference. Wash you car and feel the paint work, rub your hand across it ora microfibre. You will be able to feel its no longer smooth as it once was, this is down to tar, bugs bird poop etc etc. Ass you rub the clay across the paint you can feel the clay lifting all of these contaminants. After you have done a small section and look at the clay you will see just how much it has lifted. Like below...

Just remember this is done after you have washed it, I just dont see how people spend £30+ on polishes and apply it over that sort of muck.

Once you have clayed the car wash it off, dry it then polish it. There are some threads on DetailingWorld that show 50/50 shots of before and after clay.

These are intended to be used directly with water, no need for expensive lubes.

Takes a while to do the whole car buddy.

Quick question as i have never seen or done this before - once you have all the contaminants on the piece of clay from one panel what do you do? wash it/clean it off or can you move onto the next panel and rework the clay bar?

seems odd to me as the bar would technically have all the bits of contaminant from the last panel you did, therefore arent you just transferring it about?

all you do is fold the clay over onto itself and carry on !

As above you just fold the clay. When I use them I tear a small piece off the bar and work that until I cant fold it anymore getting a clean area. I have also seen people using warm soapy water to clean the clay.

I wash the car thoroughly, then clay one panel at a time. Once the whole car is done I then wash again and polish.

You'll be amazed how much muck you still drag off the paintwork even though you have just washed it.

and wax :p

Of course, now I would I forget the wax?
