I don't know too much about the German scheme of things here, but to help the car industry the goverment funds the purchase of new cars by contributing towards the cost of your old car!!!!

This scheme is being looked at by the British Goverment & possibly introduced here.

Now, what is this going to do, to our used car market????

Will people see this as a base price for their cars, but really this is only applicable to people buying BRAND NEW cars???

OR

Is it just a manipulation on finance & how the public percieves how the goverment spends our money to help the failing car industry???

The Government is expected to introduce a scrappage scheme to encourage motorists to trade in old cars for new ones.

The scheme could involve handing out £2,000 vouchers towards replacing vehicles which are more than nine years old.

It hopes the scheme could stimulate the flagging new car market which has seen car production fall at its fastest rate since 1968.

Reports indicated Chancellor Alistair Darling was "well disposed" toward the idea, which will be included in the Budget on April 22.

It is based on a similar scheme in Germany that has been hailed as a success.

It has seen new car sales soar 40 per cent year-on-year in March.

Manufacturers claim that in this country it could generate demand for up to 250,000 new cars.

So far this year UK new car sales are down by 44.9 per cent against the first three months of 2008.

Sources stressed that no final decision had been reached over whether the plan would feature in the Budget.

But Mr Darling is said to appreciate the "merit" in the proposal. The £160 million a year costs could be shared with the industry.

Some environmentalists have opposed a scrappage scheme, saying it is better to keep old cars running because building new ones uses more energy.

However, Friends of the Earth has supported the plan, insisting it would encourage drivers to switch from thirsty cars for more fuel-efficient models.

Auto Trader will report all the major Budget announcements that affect drivers when they are announced on Wednesday April 22.

You have to remember that it is 'up to £2000' and it has to be towards a new car... so it won't necesarilly mean old cars will suddenly be worth loads, or we can sell our old cars for more than thier worth...

Yeah I heard about this the other day! It's difficult to say really what will happen to the used car market, I'm guessing it will go down the pan as lots of people will just go get their cars crushed and say thanks very much for the 2k. But seriously, are we (as a country) in a good enough financial state to be giving everyone 2k for their shitty old cars? Do we have enough room to scrap them all? Don't think so..

What I was worried about is that this could be a step towards banning older cars, maybe they'll enforce tighter emissions tests, and to those who don't pass them; their car be deemed illegal and have to be crushed?

Well whatever happens, I don't think Gordon Brown throwing yet more of our money away will really increase new car sales by 40%!

If they can show me a new car that does 0-60 in under 10 seconds, only costs ME £600 a year to insure, only £120 a year to tax, can easily be serviced by myself, looks good, is fun to drive and gets me 44mpg then I'll happily trade in the valver for £2000 towards it.

But somehow I dont see it happening in a hurry.

What I'd be worried about is the people who have inherited old cars, and are lucky enough to get a little gem which doesnt really mean alot to them and they just go and get £2000 for it to go get crushed.

But to get this £2000 maximum you have to buy a new car, or one a year old at most. So you have to go add more than £2000 to that to buy something. And if your buying new then the government will probably get alot of that £2000 back in the tax?

I think you've always been able to get "upto £2000" and over 2k for that matter. The scheme is to give you exactly £2000 for your old car.

Vauxhall were doing a similair thing in 08 when they realeased the new Corsa. They were giving £1000 for any old car, My mate sold his punto for £1500 bought a scrapheap fiesta for £30 and traded that in for £1000.

This is the thing, people are silly enough to think their £500 runabout is suddenly worth £1500 more & then go get themselves into more debt by buying a car they really can't afford to buy........

this would only have any benefit if the people buying the new cars would be buying home grown cars, they won't tho because all British cars are shit and most have gone out of business because of this, therefore its just putting money in to other countries pockets.

it only works so well in Germany because they make cars that people want to buy.

plus keeping an old car on the road is more 'green' than buying a new car. that's some thing that the goverment would prefer not to bring to your attention, that way you might rush out and spend a big wod buying a new 'greener' car and putting a shit load of VAT in there pocket

my dads 2000 plate volvo would be eligable to be scrapped under this scheme, as would my '98 v70 wagon, its cars like this that will disappear, not classics.

the ironic thing about this is if you walked in to any main dealer today with cash in your pocket you could probably be able to get 2k knocked off the price any way with some good haggaling, but once again good old mr brown would rather piss more of our money up the wall on pointless PR stunts.

Its all about industry appeasement after all,the cars will just be put straight through the recyclers. And even new parts for old cars will dry up because less people will own old cars,and so there wont be sufficient demand to make such production viable.

The recent high-octane scrapping session,due to high metal value,saw thousands of cars crushed every day before any salvage could be taken from them - my local breakers have now started stacking pre-93's again now its slowed down again.

They automatically crushed anything pre-95 a few months ago.

This will do nothing for our impending used parts chest,whatever generation of car you own.

This scheme pisses me off alot! There are several reasons why its a joke.

It's based on the fact that alot of people know bugger all about cars/the environment, and assume any new car is more environmentally friendly than an old one, which in the case of new polo vs. old polo based on fuel consumption and CO2 emmisions is true, forgetting that the bastard thing has to be made from raw materials, which themselves create a whole load of pollution when made, not to mention the fact that all the extra components on the new car will one day have to be disposed of.

Running an old car (which is the equivalent to setting up your own coal fired power plant in some people's eyes because of emissions) must be more environmentally friendy than making a new one. I remember seeing a study a couple of years ago that concluded that the most eco friendly car in the world, including building it, running it, and recycling it, was a Jeep Wrangler or Cherokee (can't remember) from the mid 90's. Gordon Brown forgot to tell us that.

Sending money overseas to companies who are laying off uk jobs and closing facotries.

Ridding us of good cheap cars.

Killing off classics. I've seen something where Jag XJS's, Morris Minor's, an Autin 1100 (from 1966!), a Nissan 300ZX, MGB's etc. were all scrapped to get £2k off a shitty Korean thing. Also, think off all the fairly rare sought after cars of various marques and models (Escort RS Turbo's, Volvo T5's, Early Imprezas, Golf GTi, Polo's of whatever kind etc.) that are going to be scrapped because they're a little tatty. There's only so many enthusiasts out there who are prepared to spned a fair bit of cash on keeping a 20 year old, not fantastically reliable car on the road. I know most cars have to die at some point, but if this was introduced in the 70's, think of all the E-types, Mini's etc. that we wouldn't have anymore?
