You take your 10 year old car to the dealers to get your £2k part-ex against a new car. You order your new car, and as soon as it has a number plate on it, you've probably just lost £2k.

If the scheme was offered against nearly new cars, say 3 years old it'd see a lot more success. I mean even a car that's 3 years old has to be greener than one thats 10 plus years old? And afterall, it's not all about helping the car industry apparently, its about limiting our impact on the environment

Yup, save £2k and buy a year old example, and sell your decent old car for a few hundred quid, saving you a good bit in interest on whatever car loan you get.

Its a pretty flawed system. From what I've seen its being used by many people who have well maintained cars that are trading them for something new.

An example of this was my mechanic told me that one of his customers traded in his 1.6 GLX 6n with something 50k on it, FSH with 11 months MOT (serviced and timing belt changed at the last service) against a little hyundai.

Really its all the poorly maintained bangers that need to be off the road. Having to own the car for a year is a con too. To get old cars off the roads why not make it open to any car with an MOT? Then you could get some polluting old heap and trade it in as it'd be going to the scrapper.

Also, whats actually happening to the cars when they're scrapped? Are they being crushed or broken for spares?

Thats the problem, its giving people the false sense that they can afford a brand-new car as their old one is now theoretically worth £2000, thus getting even more people into debt

the old guy who owned it my phone number if he was ever to sell it.I

have never seen it for a while so i took a run to the guys house to see if

he still had it and sure enough it was there looking a nice as i last remember

seeing it.So i turned around and started to drive away when the old guy

came out of his house so i stopped and said hello and asked him jokingly

if he was ever going to sell me his car to which he replied "i'm getting a

new Skoda Fabia on Monday son"...."Skoda gave me 2.5k trade in for this

old girl and i knew you wouldn't be able to match that or i'd have given

you a call".....I was fooking gutted....the car is a wee stunner and has only

38k on the clock.That car WILL be crushed for sure as the government

want them all off the road.My mate works for a Vauxhall dealer and he

says that part of the agreement for the discount is there is a no sell on

clause and that the cars HAVE to be scrapped.

I got a dented mk3 1L. It's all beat up so noone wants the shell, I'm guessing. Can't really think there's much on it anyone wants, tbh. I'm getting rid in favour of a gleaming new toyota gayo. I've seen plenty of dudes breaking up classics on this forum so I figure I may as well get the 2 grand. Anything I've ever needed for it has come straight out of gsf and I don't think there's anything partic unique about it, so I'm thinking none of you could be that upset about it, right? I just need the improved gas mileage cos I have to do 500 miles+ a week. Am I bad?

Thats true, but the polo did its job, got me my 4 years no claims bonus and now I will be paying less monthly for a brand new car and insurance than what I was paying for third party fire and theft cover for my polo when I was 17.

Just need to drive extra carefully until august when it gets delivered

i can see the plus and minus sides to this, but what about guarantee? will you not be able to play with your car (coilovers, wheels etc) for a certain amount of time?

My grandad's mate is trading in his daewoo with just over 50k on it, said I could have it if it wasn't for the scheme. Probably would've sold it on pretty quickly, but it would've been a car =[

its just a bullshit scheme to stimulate new car sales

think how many people will just think "oh 2k off may aswell get a brand new one"

But what is wrong with having a 1989 Mk2 Polo I assume 1.0 with only 38k on the clock.

Scott if you say its mint then it must have been perfect and with such low milage a good service and it will be running like new and give 50mpg all day long. And I'll put a £10 bet on now that the Fabia will never get anywhere near to 50mpg.

New 'greener' cars are actually the biggest con ever.

For the past 3 weeks I've had a VW Jetta 2.0 tdi hire car. My initial thought on the car was "ah its a diesel,on my daily drive I'll get good milage and it will be cheaper to run than the valver"

Turns out I was wrong. From the valver on my daily drive driving not in the most eco friendly way I get 40-42mpg over the course of a week that makes my fuel bill £40-£50, basically a full tank.

So used the Jetta when I got it, drove it how I drive the valver to work, trip computer shows I'm getting on average 35-38mpg driving like I do in the valver, I can get it higher but it takes so much extra time and concentration its not worth it.

But anyway it turns out my old polluting unreliable gas guzzling Polo is more economical than a brand new diesel green machine.

At least this scrappage scheme is only for a limited time. But if I hear of anyone giving a G40 to the crusher through this I will personally come and slap you with my manhood!!

If you drove your tdi hire car like your Polo it's no wonder your mpg was rubbish. You have to drive a diesel completely differently to a petrol and use the low down torque rather than the revs. I went from a mk 2 Polo to a tdi and only got 35mpg, but then after a few weeks was getting over 55mpg.

My current car is a 3 year old Vectra CDTi 1.9 150BHP turbo diesel. I drive 500 miles a week in it and get between 48 and 50mpg on average and I don't drive slow. :-) It's also a heavy car. If the guys's buying a Fabia diesel he'll hit 60mpg easy! 50mpg in a mark 2 Polo? That's certainly a challenge.

I'm not in anyway saying that I agree with the scheme coz I don't, but there are certainly benefits with newer cars. For example 500 miles a week in a mk2 Polo is hard wark. My Vectra is comfy as hell, has aircon, cruise control, traction control, decent ICE, loads of airbags, decent brakes, ABS, blah, blah, blah, but I also love my mk2 Polo coz it's fun to drive, but in a a different way.

I prefer older cars - ok they can have some rust and reliability issues sometimes. They have more character! Newer cars are sold as more economical, but if you drive them to be economical - then they end up being no fun!

This scheme will be over soon anyway - only the first 300,000 buyers are elligable!!!!
