Well i set off to work as usual, huddersfield to wakefield on huddersfield road, passing coal mining museum (if anyone knows it)

as i head on the road i see the car infront driving slow, and a small micra infront drivign slow, we drive along and the micra keeps swerving into the middle of road.

Speeds drop a bit and again swerving, then driving right in middle of road, the road swept to the left and then the right, at this point the micra floored it, shot off, me and the car infront speed up.

All i saw was the rear lights disappear and the beams across a field, he literally just took a 90degree turn to the right.

the car in front drove off, i had one van behind me, we both pulled over, as the dust was still in the air, the car was wedged on a embankment, other side of a big trench.

I get out, and the couple in the van behind go to check on the driver, engine running, it then revs harder, stops.

Signs of life.

So they climb down and fall in this ditch lol

they get up and look in as a white male climbs out of the passenger side rear window, shaken, confused, he gets out, and runs. Straight down the road, off he goes.

So we think he is the passenger, access to the car was hard as it was next to a big tree, so the couple try and get to the drivers side.

I head to the passenger side.

To find an arm frailed out of the window, pointing up, i scramble to the side of the car, and look in, the roof crushed down, only to see the guy who ran off was the driver, and his passenger in the passenger seat.

I look through the smashed windscreen to see his body didnt look too bad, legs crushed but ok, and no blood.

Please dont read on if your a bit squeemish. (its not that bad)

i could hear him breathing, it was like he was snoring, so i see his head, pinned by the roof, to his right shoulder, it didnt look right at all, i could see the top of something, what looked like his spine, there was a deepish cut on his neck

but no blood :(

The snoring stopped, and what i have later found out, the snoring was probably adrenalin pumping and his lungs last ditch attempt to breath, and the snoring noise his sheered crushed windpipe.

i checked his pulse and nothing, he was still warm.

I climbed back down and the driver returned, he was bleeding alot, and clearly pissed.

He was shouting "paul come on, we gota go"

over and over

"paul"

then another woman tried to comfort him, calm him down, and got him a fag, the guy had a big gash on his head, he sat down, and lit the fag, and just blacked out, layed on the road

the firebrigade then appear and see to him, and get to the car, and a shake of the head

no need to cut him out, he was dead.

And that is my story.

I have never had to deal with something like this, and to be honest, i was all fine when it was happening, made jokes to the other couple that was there, gave a full statement to the police.

Drove yards down the road, and just burst into tears.

The image in my head will never go away, and the haunting noise he was making, and the lack of pulse, but warmth in his arm.

It makes you think, the 2 lads were council kevins from what i saw of one of them, and the police reports, but still, a life is a life.

I'm still a bit spooked by it now, and I'm sure it wont be going away anytime soon

I know aswell people have had much worse stories and tales, but i just cant stop thinking about it

Sorry to hear that dude but at least your ok and nothing worse happened like him taking more innocent people lives. I've been there but from a family point of view losing my brother in a car accident kind of wierd but things will sort them selves its horrible to hear and read but I'm sure youll be ok these things just take time. i dont really know what else to say just sounds horrible and and i hoep i dont have to deal with a situation like this because i really dont know what id do..........

wouldnt wish seeing that on anyone mate, really feel for you, but if you get in a car with someone whos drunk, you asking for the worst.

i witnessed drink driving once i was driving back threw little town near me called stewkley about 1am and some car was on my side of the road i swearve to the kerb to avoid it (lucky i was on 1.9D clio) he then swearved violently straight into the back of a massaratti (sp) old on but still nice car! driver gets out and bolts passanger was a mess! lucky for the guy my mate was paramedic in the army knew what too do till emergence services got there! my mate never got a thank you off the guy and his mate got off scot free because he didnt grass his mate up even tho he left him!! prob gonna do it again!

thats some seriously bad s**t. I've seen a couple of accidents happen infront of me (and been in one) but luckily there were no injuries just damaged cars. Two of my best mates were first on the scene of a fatality similar to yours except they were overtaken by the car,then came around the corner to find it had rolled several times :( They had to give evidence at the corroners (sp) court iirc.

That will stay with you throughout your life, sorry you had to experience that.

Ahh man that's a horrible situation to be in, at least you did the honourable thing and stopped unlike the car in front.

As said hope you don't lose sleep over it, knowing that there was nothing more you could possibly of done to affect the situation, that's just life unfortunately.

Very true, we felt guilty the other week when a bloke jumped into a car and drove off, but its the own persons choice like anything really, once the person leaves our premises its nothing to do with us and whats even worse is some of the people are nice that are drink driving

Jesus mate sorry to hear you've been in that sort of situation, i've seen some bad shit but thats horrific, I'm so sorry to hear it.

I'm joining the fire service hopefully this year if i get in and RTAs are my worst nightmare, finding something like that.

Hope you dont have too much difficulty in getting over it, i guess the idea is to talk to people about it rather than bottle it up and keep it in your own head.

I took my mates car keys of him and refused to give them back once when he was trying to drink drive, totally and utterly stupid.

i found a fiesta on its roof the other week in the middle of the road when we stopped i just went cold cos i expected some one to be hurt but the guy had got out and walked off also drunk so he was lucky well until i dragged him up the road for the police to get him

drink driving is stupid

iv nearly had the same sort of thing happen, we went out to get a few things from the local shop, and on the way back we had a brand spanking new corsa infront that was swerving over the road etc, we followed him for about 3 miles and i rang the police to inform them while my mate followed, he was swerving into oncoming traffic and making them mount curbs and embankments etc, he eventually encountered a roundabout and went straight over the exit central reservation blowwing out 3 tyres, we instantly jumped out of our car and leged it over to him and took the keys out of the ignition, police turned up with an ambulace and it turns out that he was a diabetic and his blood sugar was extremely low and he wanted to go get a mars bar! i think he lost his licence due to this.... I'm just glad nobody was hurt as we would have been first on scene :(

ha I'm diabetic aswell, yeah bye bye to his license, for a good 2 or 3 years, you have to go through a hell of alot to get it back if you have an accident, and i think it falls under the same as being drunk/stoned while driving.

If anyone else is diabetic, boring i know but i got told by the nurse i went to see once that if your driving the minimal your blood mmol can be is 5.0

yup it was, again i remember that day too, never good to drive to pinderfields and see the air ambulance coming down to where he was.

He got t boned at a junction, guy pulled out and "didnt see him" he got smashed up pritty badly, knee damage, still got the pics somewhere.

He got paid compensation for it, but what people forget with compensation, it is compensation for the loss of normal life!

once he passes 40 50 that is when that money will not seem so much

Drink driving is such a big problem, and the police skim over it, hide it a little that so many do it

The should cut their balls off and put them in a drunk driver memorium, one testicle represents a life lost to drunk driving

I'm glad the driver has to deal with the fact he killed his mate for the rest off his life

But to me, that punishment is not good enough neither is losing his licence for 2 or 3 years

He should never be allowed to drive again as far as I'm concerened

Our punishment law is a fucking joke, but I won't rant off topic about it
