i just bought a white mk2 polo gt coupe and had to bring it home. it did almost 200 kilometers without problems but as i was reaching at my hometown i wanted to see how did it compare to my ex-g40 and pulled from 5th gear to 160km/h. after 10 secs at that speed it started to lose speed as it was running out of gas although i had the tank full.

after that, i left the car for lunch and when i arrived it had no idle. it pulls normally (i guess) but if i take my foot from the pedal it just dies

was it something that clogged the carburator or fuel pump?

A mk2 polo with a gt multipoint injection engine fitted??

Or the mk2 coupe s/GT with the carb fed 1.3??

If it is the carb fed engine first of all get the jets in the carb blown out as often shit gets stuck in them and blocks fuel causing the problems that you have described. Used to do it on mine, drive for a bit.... power just disappears slowly bit of jerking and then nothing. Took jets out, blew crap out of them and cleaned them put them back in and the problem was gone.

If its the multipoint ECU controlled GT engine it would be more likely be a sensor/earthing/electrical/ECU problem. When i put the GT engine into my mk2 coupe i had problems with the lambda sensor and then a lack of one earth strap (idiot me) causing the ECU to get the hump.

If carb fed engine problem does sound like fueling.

i had very similar probs with my ibiza injection engine, i had to left foot brake for about a month before i figured out what the prob was. isv. took it off, stuck a pipe to the throttle body, got a jubilli to the pipe, then tightened the clip to get it to run on idle at jus under 1000rpm. it did rev up then rev down by about 50rpm. but it worked.

do i need to remove the carburator from the intake manifold to clean the jets? the loom attached to it is pretty complex, I'm afraid to forget which hose and cable goes where :\

checked the fuel pump and filter and fuel pressure looks ok so it must be from the carb...

this is weird, i went for a ride today, the car was still not idling... i pulled 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear to 5500rpm and when i stopped, the car was idling perfectly again lol

any idea on what is happening?

btw, when the engine is at 900rpm, the oil light is on but if i touch the gas pedal it goes of... what does it mean? bad oil pump?
