I recently fitted new alloys and have started hearing a constant knocking sound coming from the rear (i think nearside) mainly as i turn left, but sometimes just going straight.

It doesn't happen when turning right though :S

The wheels all appear to be tight etc. so just wondering if it's likely to be suspension?

Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

If it's the rear then it could be the tyres scrubbing the arches.

Perhaps it's coincidental that you've noticed when turning left if it is the tyres scrubbing, as it will scrub when ever the wheel hits a dip or pothole.

Well it's the stock exhaust, but I suppose it could be loose...

Would scrubbing produce a knocking sound, surely it'd be a scraping sound or something?

Everything's stock apart from the wheels, not lowered or anything.

I did them up pretty tight when I put 'em on...

Could be suspension.. but mine is the exhaust knocking on the rear axle when bumpy straight or turning right and occasionally left. Stock exhaust and happened before and after fitting coilovers (so i figure its not suspension)

Havn't resolved it yet, rubbers look fine IMO...

Don't know if this find the source of the noise!?

Well I'm pretty sure it's not the zorst as it does it on completely smooth surfaces.

Yeah, i suppose so. I'll give it a check tomorrow.

I thought it might be something in the boot too, like the spare wheel. But checked and all seems fixed.

id be worried if your wheelbearings knock, they usually make a grinding sound or wherring

new or used wheels? just a thought but have you had to wheels checked to make sure they're not buckled? I had a similar thing when I got a secondhand of alloys..sure enough one of them turned out to be a little buckled

did you buy new wheel bolts? I've got longer bolts once i got my wheels and they catch the brakes on the inside of the drum that makes a clicking sound. just a thought

Since getting my new wheels i get a scraping sound coming from drivers front when i turn left.... The wheel catches on the arch lining, took the wheel off and you can see the marks lol.

Wheels re 8's all round, but i found it wierd thats its just the drivers side when i turn left.

i really think it maybe might be wheel bolts...i thought id tightened them up tight and turned out id missed one..drove me insane lol

yea some nob crossthreaded my 1300 golfs nsf wheel hub, bolts worked loose and the fucker fell off on a roundabout

or it could be the problem i had, the wheels i put need fitted had a weird offset tht meant the inside of the wheel was catching the suspention when i hit a bump or pot hole. Get yourhand between the wheel and strut and make sure there a good inch or 2 away.

I cant find anywhere where you've stated if this 'knocking' noise is in timing with the wheel speed or not. If so,its a wheel/tyre/brake/hub thing.

But if its random,only then can it be something like the exhaust or.. the exhaust.

That's either loose wheel bolts (suggested),bolts too far in the drum and fouling the shoes (suggested),or the inside of the spokes are catching the brake caliper if its a rear disc.

Jacked the car up and turned the wheel by hand,checking for any fouling?

Had a look this morning (when I could actually see) and turns out that there was 3 bolts missing on the rear nearside, and one was loose. So there is only one that's done up... great!

All bolts on the other three wheels are as tight as a tight thing on a tight day on tight island.

So hopefully they haven't stipped the thread... going to get some locking bolts later, from halfrauds but don't know what ones to get? Anyone know the length/size needed?
