Brake drum lip

Featured Replies

I've got a question about the lip on my drum brake, I'm not sure if it's supposed to be there or not. I'm talking about both lips, the one on the inward side and outward side. I'm going to get the drums done because the pads are gone but I need to fix up the drum before I can even hope to put on the new pads, so I need to know if any lip needs to be there...

doesnt matter really, I tend to grind the outer lip off with an angle grinder as it makes fitting and removing the drum easier. The lips just form as the drum wears through use, new drums start off flat.

Can I put on new brake pads without grinding it down? I might have trouble syncing getting the drums done and installing new pads.

Yeah you can mate, shouldn't be a problem at all!

Alright! I thought it could ruin new brake pads without having a smooth drum surface all around. The contact surface is fine, but the rest, as you can see, needs a bit more grind. Well, 120 grit, here I come then.

Cheers!

they only touch the smooth part anyway, its removing the drum without being able to get to the adjuster thats the pain in the arse.

120 grit to remove the lip? You'll be there for years! It's a job for an angle grinder.

why not just buy new drums?

Looks to be plenty of life left in those!

I ground my lip off with a dremmel type tool. Makes the drums a lot easier to get each year for a service

I just bought new ones and new wheel bearings. A lot easier.
