Hey Guy's a mate of mine just told me that his car failed his MOT due to low washer fluid.....

The Assesor apparently said

"you can either take your car away and fill it up or we can fill it up with water now"

then reteseted it and passed it.

Is this normal? i didn't realise you could fail on low washer fluid, (low not empty) plus the person must have gone through the paper work to fail it and then the paper work to re test it..

Low fluid isn't a fail. An empty bottle isn't really a fail either, so long as there is enough fluid in the lines for the tester to check the spray pattern.

Yes, it's a fail because they don't know if it's not working due to a blockage/dead pump or low fluid, but I can't believe they'd do a retest over that, I've known testers top up the fluid mid test in front of the VOSA bloke and just got a nod and a smile.

you've got to have windscreen washers to pass an MOT (if you have a windscreen) so yeah having no fluid in it is a fail. Surprised they didn't just chuck a bit of water in and have done with it though.

Bit silly he failed it, but at the same time the owner of the car (being your friend) should really make sure his levels are topped up and not low, doesnt take too much effort just to check each week, but hey hoe, whats done is done he'll know for next time now.

yeah to be fair my mate has a golf gti so he has a warning light that tells him it's low haha.
