When the engine is running but not moving, occassionally the car just revs on it own, and today for the first time whilst moving it started accelerating itself

sometimes it'll just sit there holding itself at 4000 revs.. and i have no idea why its doing this. anybody had this problem? or know how to solve it? thanks

I'm going to say either the seal on the throttle body or the 'dustbin lid' possibly the throttle sensor thing they have.

But id say an air leak.

ok cheers, my dad said it might be that too. thought i'd ask incase anyone else had this problem and it was something else

iv got the same proplem dude, apparently it might be the oxigen sensor in the cat?

check your throttle cable first. mine got stuck on my g40. took it off, refitted it and it worked fine again. its not uncommon for the cable to pinch itself and become stiff, resulting in sticky throttle responce.

you might aswell check the easy free stuff before spending out on new bits

I had the same problem with my ford escort, and it the throttle idle valve which was sticking open. But it might be something different as its VW.
