Window replacement, plz help

Featured Replies

Hey guys

This is my first post!

I've been given a Polo 1.3 Genesis L reg by friend who is leaving the UK for New Zealand. Its a great runner with 86k o the clock.

Its looking abit tired externly though, the paintwork has lost its shine, and some areas of the paintwork are giving way to rust. I wanna bring it back to its former glory! Not sure how much its gonna cost though.

Anyway onto the main point, unfortunately about a month ago the car got broken into, and the triangle shaped window on the front left side passenger side got smashed. My mate got his local garage to looking into replacing it, they said something like £300! Thats more than the car is worth in its current state!

I was hoping one of you guys could lead me in the right direction and give m some tips too.

Can I replace the window myself?

TIA

I think you'll need to get a window cut for the car, then remove all the rubber seals and then place the window in and put the rubber seals back into place

Sorry I've edited my answer to this because I thought you had a mk3 polo so assumed it would be an easy fix. I don't know how that window is fitted to the door because if it's bonded then it's not a straight forward fix. If it's not bonded in then it should be an easy fix from the scrappy.

I had the exact same window smashed on my mk2 when I got it and got one for £5 not £300. Also fairly easy to fit.

Oh and welcome, Get some pictures up and I'm sure folk will give you further advice on what can be done. Oh and good to put where your from below your picture.

I'm sure someone who knows will come along and correct my answer anyhow. Too late I'm tired lol.

Cheers guys

I'll have to look into this!

Local garage said £300, which is nuts! If I can get it for a £5er I'm laughing.

I'll get some pics up soon, cheers again.

300 notes is well over the top. I had my windscreen repaced for £100, brand new, fitting and all!

Someones mugging u off mate! Get down the scrappy

H&S

I'm sure if you open the door & look along the top edge where the vertical strip meets the top ,there is a screw which holds that strip in. With the window wound down & that strip out its possible to change that small window.

Must be cheap from a scrappy.

Can download the haynes manual from the engine section on this forum for full instructions.

Yeah as Red Indian Mk3 said, take the door card off (by prising off the door handle cover, window winder cover, inner wing mirror cover, and unscrewing the screws where the door shuts) and you'll find the other bolt to remove the vertical bar. Wind the main window down and with a bit of push/pull the small front window will come out, which you can replace with a scrapyard item for around a £5.

Sad that the whole car is worth less than £300, but I'm in the same situation and it's my "life and soul" as people put it. Just got to know what can be done and what can't....

P.s your mate got it good pissing off to NZ! Went there over xmas and it rocks :D

As above, peice of piss to do.

Cheers again guys.

Now I just gotta find a scrappy in Bristol, first I need to check Red Indian's advice to see if I can actually replace the window.

Ray K, my car looks just like yours, what year and model is it?

I've been really busy, I will get some pics up as soon as I can!

Cheers again

It's a 1994 CL Coupe, which is the mk2f or mk3 depending on who you talk to! It ran from '90-'94.

You do? That's awesome, cheers!

Is the window bit seperate, ie not in a spare door?

Nottingham is miles away, otherwise I'd shoot up and get it right away.

If I were to arrange for a courier service to pick it up would that be cool with you?

they are out the doors ready to fit

i've got a pic somewhere

i can probably arrange postage

at your cost but i'd need to sort it

You're an star! Thanks again, I recieved them yesterday!

Gonna try and fit them today.

Will upload before and after pics :D

Juts fitted the new window, was relatively easy, apart from the fact the window on the passenger doesn't wind down or up, bit I got it sorted.

The new window is a slightly different fit eg the rubber fitting looks abit different to the originaly, but I still managed to make it fit. Thanks again everyone for your help.

I've taken some pics, 1 before, 1 after, and 1 of the driver side (you might be able to see the difference?

This polo, needs some work thats for sure. The passenger window doesn't go down or up, both front seats do not tilt forward, making it interesting for rear passengers to get in or out :p
