Yes it can be done

Would need manifold, the carbs, throttle linkage, and probably a rolling road setup

You'd never pass a legal MOT again though.

it would be easy enough to swap back to the injection come mot time.

Just passing on the info though shabbers...........

Plus, roadside check - instant fine!

or motor bike carbs seen a few of them done

i'm planing on using twin carbs on my scirocco, i also looked in to bike carbs as a budget option but thought if i'm gonna do it i might as well do it properly.

the best bet is to just keep an eye out in the for sales sections on here, ed38, retrorides, club gti, and on ebay. the stuff you needs pops up on these sites all the time.

found some twin 40 of a mk2 golf 1.8 just need to find a manifold to fit my lump any ideas on were i could get this or some one that makes them

You'll also need a new set of chokes and jets then. If you want them on a small block 1300 theres enough manis around, or buy new. www.dellorto.com have one...

nothing rong with runing carbs on injection engine just block off the injectors and make a manifold up pop some carbs on and get the right type of pump

set them up right and your exhaust emissions will be fine

and you will get thorw mots fully legal

At idle twin carbs can be just as good on emissions as an old pierburg if you set them up correctly.

Should see no reason why they shouldn't go through and MOT

also were could i get a manifold

Either the above, if the port/stud spacing is the same or regal autosport could probably supply you with a new dbilas item for £250ish.

look at the web site well good cheers for that i was thinking would i need to get it remaped to fuel them or just uprate the fuel pump ?

could you not run it on a earlier polo non ecu dizzy and get rid of the ECU?

  • Author

maybe how do you mean

the ecu on your engine controls the injection and the spark, if you take away the injection system than your ecu won't be getting the information it needs to run properly. putting carbs on it will get rid of the need for the eco to control fueling so if you fitted the dizzy and any other bits and bobs from a non ecu engine then it gets rid of the need for the ecu altogether.

that's my understanding any way but i'm no expert. luckily the engine i'm doing this on has no ecu so i haven't had to look into any of this.

lol thanks i think i know what you mean i think my has a dizzy cap any way i think its just a signal point injection i think any way not shore myself not really spent the time looking

only just noticed you have an 8v, for some reason i had it in my head it was a 16v

if it is spi then i think they still have an ecu and no matter which engine it is it should still have a dizzy. the deference being if you get a dizzy from an earlier carbed polo then it won't need an ecu to control it so you can just ditch the ecu, plus with this there should be less wires so you could go for a more 'cleaned' engine bay, would look sweet with the carbs.

you would need the ignition setup from a mk2 coupe s or mk2 golf 1.3

ignition amp

coil

vac advanced distributor

cool cool thanks every one for your help i should be picking up some twin 40s later on in the week just got find a manifold then hope fully i should be half way there

look a bit more at it today will try some ideas from every one and see how i get keep you all posted on how it goes i will try and get pics up as i go along with the build

and yeah you right McLovin it would look sweet with out all them wires maybe even move the battery to a hiding place

Sorry but I stand by my previous statement regarding not getting through a proper legal MOT. You'll need to run a cat and I really do think that you'll struggle to get the carbs to run lean enough to get through a Euro II test.
