What's up with scrapyards recently?

Featured Replies

So the other day I went to two of my local scrap yards that i have used before, and both times they wouldn't let me have a walk around! They said i have to order parts over the counter from now on which is a load of shit, the whole idea of a scrapyard in my opinion is that you can have a good look around and find things that may be useful to you.

Anyone else noticed this? again, might just be in my area (cheshire)

Andy.

I've not noticed it mate, but that does sound really shit. They should let you walk around and find things you want to buy otherwise how are you going to know that what you've bought is the correct part

haven't had any round my way for years now

haven't been able to walk around scrapyards down here for AGES.. it's so annoying :( even if you don't want anything it's good to see what's there :lol:

Yeh its crap :(

Its all about health and safety isn't it?

there are a couple near me and two of them either get the stuff for you or escort you around and the one i use just points you in right direction and lets you get one with it!

i was just wondering around a couple of weeks ago and i found a back pair of KW coilovers on a valver so i whipped them off and they were only £92 i was well impressed!

same down here the VW and audi breakers dont let u walk around due to health and saftey as there like pikeys they just pile cars on top of each other instead of using them stands

All the North Wales ones are like that now. Its bloody crap, the made more money off me when i could walk around as id spot stuff for other cars that my mate/family needed for theirs, now its all done at the desk, so i only check what i need for myself and leave. none of them have a mk1/2/3 polo in anymore so dont visit them often anyway.

Some are like it round here now.

One week I went to one and got a bumper n a few other bits off a MK3. went the next week and they wouldn't let me in, said fuck it then and walked away

There loss at the end of the day. I'll just go elsewhere.

I don't see why they are doing it, cant they just put a sign up saying you are entering at your own risk and if anything happens they aren't liable? They would have actually made some money out of me then.

If you dont mind travelling for about half an hour get yourself down to Northwich metals, got loads of mk4's in

Yea i think it for people like me who kinda walk and put stuff in pockets loll

But they haven't started it down here yet we just chuck on a hi-vis jacket and away you go, other scrap yards you just walk in say what you want

I went to pease pottage the other day and they wouldn't let me into the bit with the best cars.

i use 2 near me, one you have to pay £1 to get in and they give you a hivis and the other just say the vws are in the yard, where else would they be? then you pay at the counter. both dont have a mk3 in tornado red with a good drivers wing :-( been looking for weeks

It's all health and safety (and avoid being sued, think of the claim if you feel), plus i bet they (per item) can make more money.

also its insurance, they can pay lower rates if its not accessable by the public

but like everyone says, its totally stupid, half of time i walk away with stuff i never intended on getting anyway

Ebay is easiest now for bits, or scrap a car yourself, bring the yard to you lol

The scrapyard i use issue you with one of those Yellow

Hi-Vis vests and make you sign in and out of the yard.

Scrappy I use, you walk in the yard, wave at a man who stands in the cab of an old Bedford van, take what you want, pay him a fiver. He even lets you borrow a petrol Stihl saw if he likes you enough

i went to one like that a couple of years ago, had to put a hard hat on too, proper over the top prices. my local vw breakers (Sandburns) mostly sell stuff over the counter but they still let you have a mooch about the yard if you need some thing they haven't got in the stores. there was a great little vw scrapyard in nuneaton up until about a year ago (Volksline) the bloke that run it was sound and knew what he was talking about, you'd just tell him what you were looking for and if he had a car in there with it on he'd just chuck you the keys to the yard and tell you to whip it off.

There are some real pikeys near me where you just walk around then show them what you have and they pluck a number out the air, only thing is that loads of parts are broken because people just rip them out to get to the parts they want, which is rubbish!

Non of them are on stands they are just on the axles with the engines all in some massive pile!

This is just by makro near the trafford centre in manchester

some near me still let you walk around but some don't anymore.

I'd have thought it had more to do with people half-inching stuff than anything to do with 'elf&safety.

That the bit right at the back ?, Have to ask Chris to let you in as your not aloud to take anything off the cars they have to do it for you hence why its locked.
