Another bike carb question.......

But i ask this

Why are bike carbs so desirable when Dellorto and Weber already provide the solution?

They're less fannying around, look better and more accurate.

Carbs are a great idea, grab a set of Dellortos or Webers and you'll be pleased!

Pair of non-emission dellortos, inlet manifold, simple linkage, pressure regulator, bolt on air filters (or make up your own box), electric fuel pump

I think its the cost mainly dude, if your clever you can have bike carbs in and running for 100 quid max

yehh id love to have webers but theres like £500 for the set an then I've got to get manifold an every thing

please explain how i can get bike carbs running for £100 :)

you could steal a set off you dads old bike like what i did :-) (he said i could have 'em cos he got some new ones) then make up a manifold for not a lot out of a old gasket for a template and some steel/ ali tubes and plate. it helps if you can weld? failing that set of carbs off ebay, bogg bros manifold for £170+pnp

hope that helps

sweet car :-D

bike carbs are cheaper and more efficient, (due to their design being in between su and weber) even if you get a second hand pair of webers, they will still need a refurb andjetting correctly and often fall out of tune. ( i know this as my dad and many of my mates run rally cars with them)

I admit, they look the nuts, but i would recomend bike carbs as you can get a set of cbr 600 ones for 40 quid or so which, once rejeting, (this can be done with a 1.5mm drill) will work fine

If you can weld, making an inlet mani for a bike carbs isnt hard and is also cheap. Finding a DCOE inlet for a polo engine in this country may be hard too, although I've seen enough of them on german ebay. Even harder if you have an engine like an AFH etc

And finally, bike carbs have been done to death on the polo so there are many people you can give a helping hand.......

well by the sounds of it bike carbs are the way forward, do you get the same sound that twin webbers give???

an what would be everything i would need?? can you make me a quick list haha :)

cheers every one for being so helpfull

They give a similarly nice noise yeah, slightly different i've found but nice.

Manifold/carbs/electric pump/regulator/fuel lines

Has anyone been looking at his car! that's bloody nice mate, I could live without a faster car to have that.

Yup, nice. And some carbs will make it even nicer.

thanks again for all the awesome comments on my car :D

few questions tho...

I've looked on ebay and found these:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HONDA-CBR600FX-CBR60...93%3A1|294%3A50

are they exactly what i need or would i need some off a bigger bike or what as i have no idea what I'm looking for really.

what sort of manifold would i need??? would i have to buy one or could i get one made??? if any one has some pics of some on there car id really like to have a look if you could post some up that would be cool

cheers lads, i know this is a polo club an I've come along asking questions about a golf just wanna say thanks for the warm welcome, I'm ganna stick around :)

I've got a mk1 1.3 exactly the same, and i'm just trying to do a bike carb conversion. Looking at carbs off a zx6r although these are 38mm chokes and might be too big/drink! :? Would be reeally helpful if anyone has any picyures?? Especially of the manifold? Thanks very much. Rand Bogg Bros and they really weren't very helpful over the phone. Also, anyone know where i could get them set up down south? Bogg Bros is a 4 hour drive  cheers :-)

well they're only helpful if you have a specific question to ask them,

they cant tell you completely how to do the job and they dont know every car and every set of carbs out there.

iv always found them exteremly helpful and weel priced for the service and quality of parts you get.

are them carbs what I'm lookin for then?? cause if there the right ones ill buy them :)

Not sure mate, sorry. Surely someone on here has done it to a 1.3?? If there are any old posts or pictures i would be really grateful? :?

i found them awesome when i went to see 'em about my scirocco.

i cant wait to get it running on them :-D

i had bike carbs on my coupe s but after about a week i started the car went down the road and they pulsed and set on fire it was the hardest fire I've had to put out lol id play it safe and pay abit more and get twin 40s or somthing just my advice but still up to you as sometimes there fine depends how much u like your car really

grungeisdead's golf was a prime of example of the dangers of carbs :(

personally i think the chokes on a set of 600cc carbs is usually too big, larger bore will loose torque at the bottom end and make the car harder to drive, its to do with air flow velocity through the carbs and fuel atomisation. with carbs there is always and optimum, larger chokes (lower air velocity) will push this optimum higher up the rev range.

my polo with a 1.3 and DCOE 40s choked down to 30mm was still a pain in the arse for traffic compared to the 1.4 with a DMTL in my other polo, it was significantly more powerful above 4000rpm than the 1.4, but the low down torque used for regular driving just wasnt there.

i'd still buy the 600cc carbs, but a 1.6 AEE engine at the same time, the larger CC will suit the large 36-37mm chokes in a set of 600cc carbs better than a 1.3

30mm is not choked down enough!

28mm max on a 1.3 unless you're going racing. 30mm is good for 1.6

progression tuning makes hell of a difference with low down response, you can still get some good performance with twin carbs.

mine dont go bad , and she`s a mk2 with a gt lump on 900 carbs with 600 jets . does over fuel but i`m sure that it can all be fine tuned in the future and that was all built for for the price of a cam belt and a few gaskets and some daels with mates for the carbs and neil-dubgt for free gt bits :-)

not really had a rag with much but can do a mk1 caddy with a tdi init and am well close to a mk1 golf with a 18 16v , with it only being set up to my ear

oh and i think the chokes are 40mm on them 900`s

Edited by polo d

40mm chokes are buggeringly big for a 1300. But for some reason bike carbs with bigger chokes still seem to work ok... maybe better atomisation at low air speeds..

most of the ones i've seen have a throat plate which opens with the needle operated by vac/pressure, no idea where these are attached to when used on a car mind. this changes the flow area/velocity, as well as the butterfly.

Polo d, has you car been on any rolling roads yet? be intregued to see what effect chokes that are way too large for the engine does to the torque curve.

Any pictures of manifold or help with the conversion? Cheers
