i was thinking that Gaz, but i was scared to take the big nut out the bottom pulley  so just left it. :-( but i bought a new big nut for the day when i get the balls to do it!

have u ever heard or know if all loons have MPI pumps on them? as mine did which i though was mighty weird since its a AAU! :?

Alex the lock covers are only about £4 the pair from VW, but be carefull there are ones with a lip and ones without its the ones with no lip that fit our polos.

How'd you know it was an MPI pump? From the socket? All the fuel pumps I've seen down there have been corroded beyond recognition. Those big nuts are a bugger to take off, I've used a good sized monkey wrench in the past to hold the pulley with a 3' breaker bar on the bolt. Works a treat. :)

its got the swan neck gaz, like a upside down "L"to the connector, spi ones the connector goes straight into the body. i will check the part number, its in good nick even has thegreen tap band round it! as i bought a rear NZ loon wiring loom as the connectors to the pump are different on the MPI so i was going to change it all, but due to this my MPI pump pluged straight in.

it seems weird!

So your still on the hunt for a green Genesis heck then? Will let you know if i see one about, but i've only ever seen two!

I wouldn't assume anything about the fuel pumps unless you can see the part number. They might have had subtle design mods making them look different, i know the SPI and MPI ones i have had side by side looked identical. All the mk3 polos had the same interior wiring looms (except obviously for chassis lengths), only changing in about 1993 when a different two pin plug was used on the pump.

thanks nick! (you still got any loon boot spoilers?) :unibrow:

will wire brush them and checked the number tomorrow, The bosch and VW part numbers stamped on the body and on the plastic leg also i think.

checked all the wiring loom for has the connector been changed but nope, so looks like its been a mistake at the factory! :? maybe they ran out of NZ engines :paranoid:

spi pump on the left of my 1.0l genesis original engine.

mpi pump on the right taken off the loon.

the wee connectors are different (spacing of the lugs on the top).

well since the last post the loons got new brake splash back plates on the front and new top mounts so its feeling a bit tighter.

one job i have been putting off is changing the dash loom as VW bodged it to feck in at the dealers fitting a alarm immobiliser, so its never worked since i got the car then 2 random days it decided to kick in an ment i had to bump start her, so took the day of work to fit it and my wipers as they only worked on speed one which is rather annoying when you live in scotland!

how it looked before i started, no rattle squeeks but its chopped to hell below.

120609.jpg

half way to lifting the dash out (40 mins all in)

1206091.jpg

you can see at least 5 bodged connectors alone in this picture dealers  must have been a friday afternoon job.

12060910.jpg

can finally see the culprits

12060914.jpg

the dreaded battery tray got cleaned up and treated, will get it welded one day but since shes garaged and the car park at works covered it stays dry.

12060918.jpg

then it was cup of tea time and put it all back in.

12060920.jpg

so happy to say it all works now, and the wiper issue wasnt the wiring or the switch it was the motor so its in the bin now.

Haven´t been here for a while...

Nice to see quite a lot of lovely Progress on your Polo´s

This thread reconfirmes the equivalent theory

Also got those door lock covers, and a lot of literature 8-)

Cheers

Manuel

Went up to see ross at the weekend to play polo for a while and help him be ruthless in binning double and tripler polo spares, it’s a sad job but someones got to say ok stop. ( I'm the wrong person for that job as i keep everythign but nevermind)

We played find the mystery clunk on the loon, as its ben bugging me for about 3 weeks now, after 2 driveshaft changes, new top mounts, wheel bearings its still clunking.

150609.jpg

Then found the oil leak on the old engine had dripped onto the arb rubber making it like a burst couch. normal polo on left, oil soaked one on right so it was rather slack, you wouldn’t want you are miss’s like that put that way.

1506091.jpg

So it was arb off and new bushes in, and it seems a lot happier, but the clunk remains so think it’s a gearbox out job and the diff needs a look at :crybaby: so fingers crossed its nothing major.

1506092.jpg

1506093.jpg

and my old vw alarm got driven over with a folk lift then splatted with a tarmac compressers, with the help of ross's yard of big tonka toys to play with. so have to admit vw built it well but its not match for a tarmac compresser lol.

And the latest addition to the polo fleet my favorite model of polo off all time another black genesis squareback. Its future is unclear it was a random autotrader purchase, as anyone who has ever looked for a black heck knows there aint many about, so I had to save it. Apart from the stone chip effect paint on the sills and bottom 1/3 of the door it’s a decent wee heck with 81k and taxed and moted for a while yet.

polo number three :D

three cars are quite normal,i´ve got three dubs, too

looks bargain richard

richard. what was the issue with the wipers u had?

I've got a bit of an issue. they only work on the fastest speed. changed the stalk 3 times so i don't think it's that.

do u think it's the motor?

wee update...

My G40s been off the Road 2 years now but its been getting love in terms of new bits, cleaned and kept dry in the garage.

So since ross recently finished his G40 and I got a go I realised how much I missed it.

My original engine needs a helicoil insert to the inlet manifold TB and 2 helicol inserts at the flywheel for the sump and a repaint and new cylinder head gasket as it leaked a tiny bit and dirtied all my paint :-( but my garage has no power and when I bought the saloon it ate a lot of my time and effort as I converted it to a GT.

But locally a 100% standard G40 engine conversion came up for sale. So I thought yeah drop that in the saloon, Its not mint but I have started giving it a make over genesisGT style.

I hope to have it in my squareback to let it go for a MOT for the end of January all going well. Or in my saloon for summer haven’t decided totally yet.

Heres some pics so far…..

As bought 91 G40 engine out a Tornado red rusty G with 1 careful owner and 2 or 3 who abused it.

Picture002.jpg

Picture006.jpg

Picture001.jpg

How its currently hanging..

IMG_2292.jpg

The bits before going to the powder coaters….

IMG_2251.jpg

£120 later….

211209.jpg

2112094.jpg

2112097.jpg

So the plans to give it a full cosmetic refurb, new gaskets and nuts and bolts throughout and a good service and that should be it. The Chargers needing a rebuild as it was last done by Jabba sport in 2001 and the boost pipes looks suspiciously oily inside.

061209g402.jpg

IMG_2329.jpg

And so the squareback doesnt get jelious it got some bits – if you recognise all the bits you need out more as some are quite anal.

2112091.jpg

and i found on Scottish VAG the hecks rebuild thread from back in 2007, the old girl doesnt really look like that anymore.

been a while since i posted any pics:

heres the latest....

excuse the black electrical tape side repeters will do a proper job when funds allow in a month or two.

G40 badges are on for the week then its back to polo or maybe black GT ones haven't decided yet.

1-18-2.jpg

1-18-4.jpg

still got a pile of wiring for extra add on bits to do keep putting it off as its a pain.

1-18-5.jpg

not sure on her power output. it was 170.4bhp with 164.5lb ft when it was in the previous owners saloon.

but i now does not have aquamist, a cat back exhaust system and a seperate oil feel for the charger

so not sure i recon 160ish :?

its also carrying alot of extra weight with add on bits - as its a cruiser rather than a racer i wanted.

1-18-7.jpg

18-1.jpg

1-18.jpg

excuse the rake will get it sorted in the next 2 months.

bits look good rich. (and i know them all LOL)

if its the crankshaft end plate on the flywheel end of the block with sump holes threaded, you can take the fly off - replace end plate/seal/paper seal and that'd be a better fix in my opinion. The end plate is same on all mk2/3 blocks i think.

  • Author

well you earn a anorak too pete recognising all the bits. :-D

yeah its the aluminum end plate thats fecked at the flywheel side the screws gripped when i put them in but my socket side walls were to fat and made it go kill the thread :-( . I will maybe swap the plate round then. VW only sell the seal for there with the plate but its nearly £80! so will go raid my AAU engine i think. cheers!

cool cars pal,real credit

Looks great!
