Right.....I've recently got myself a replacement rear bumper (it came with some scuffs and has a little crack in the bottom which I'm going to fix, probably melt the crack with a soldering iron or fibreglass it, not sure yet) but anyway back to the main point....

progress on the bumper is not much lol, after i got home from my exam i managed to get both of the bump strips out, took about 20 minutes to get both the left side and right side out, once i got a couple of clips off i found a method to take the rest of easily and quickly lol

next step is sanding the area where the bump strips were (the black bits) and the area around the bump strips

can anyone give me any advice ? should i plastic weld in some plastic and recess it a bit so that i can fill on top (after sanding of course) or shall i just go all out and use body filler/bumper filler or fibreglass and slowly build it up and then prep for paint ?

i thought i might aswell give it a go and see how hard it is to smooth a bumper plus i wanna learn how to do it, so I'm kinda teaching myself lol, the recess on the 6n2 bumpers aren't as deep as the recess on the 6n bumpers, i thought they would have the same kind of recess.

but anyway, ill keep you all posted on the progress, tomorrow i should be sanding the whole bumper, getting it ready for filling

I'm just stuck with one little bit now, dont know how to build up the different layers so i can blend in the recess with the rest of the bumper, thinking about using bumper filler (its the same as normal filler, just a bit more flexible) the only problem is i dont know wether i should plastic weld or build up the filler and fibreglass...thinking and trying to research what would be easier and give a better finish

yeah there was a thread on here of some-one doing a 6n bumper they plastic welded the recess and then recessed it back a bit and then fibreglassed and then filled on top, if thats understandable, thats how i want to do my one

lollll yeahh...i got ahead of myself haha...i wanna get the bumper done and then i need to do the front one and then need to slam the car, then ill start bringing it to meets lol...if i do it well enough i might end up doing some for other people, ill see what happens though, ill start sanding it today/tomorrow and then post up some more progress in here

right ill start again

i get some plastaic and cut it to the same size as the hole (also has to be the same plastic as the bumper or itll not weld)

try and get the plastic as close to the edge of the bumper means less filling and less likely to crack

anyways i tack it into place with odd spots with soldering iron or plastic welder

next melt excess plastic all the way around the bit thats gettin welder

sand it down to get all the crap bit off then add abit of JD weld over it to give it a bit of strenght,

flat that down again

if tehre any big dents front wher eit hasnt fitted probly put a light skim off fibreglass filler in

smooth that down

then i use elastic filler, fill over it with a decent coat, check that it smooth and trying to keep the contoor of the bumper

give the bumper a good grey scotchbrite and smooth off the sanded areas with some 180 grit then 320 and give it nice coat of plasitc filler primer anmd flat down with 600 or 800

then paint

if youve doen it right itll look nice and standard

done this meathod a couple of times on a customers car

lol thats much better, ill keep that in mind when i do mine =) I'm considering cutting down the bump strips i took out and using that to put into the recess

I've been reading round and apparently you can use any kind of plastic, it doesn't necessarily need to be the exact same as the bumper

course i dont want it to crack, just saying what I've read, not like I'm going to follow that though lol, haven't even sanded the bumper yet!

noooooooooooooo all wrong :-D i would'nt plastic weld as for if not done write then its not effective at all id make sure you prep the bumper 1st and sand the area your smoothing realy well with an 80 grit or somthing harsh to start with then id fill it full off fibre glass ( the paste not the strands) warm it to dry well or wait for it to dry then usin the 80 grit or what ever you used to sand the bumper down use that to take down the fibre glass down then use filler to finish it off aply a guide coat and sand that off usin a 180 grit usin a flat block and keep block flat as you remove guide coat ( this will show you if theres any wobbles or low spots as for there will still be guide coat left and will also remove harsh scratches so then this will be primerble ) if your left with guide coat just keep aplyin filler take it down slightly and aply guide coat and do it again :-D intill smooth and correct

then high build primer plentty off coats and then a guide coat and use 1000 wet and dry paper ( usin water with this ) and a block and remove guide coat again :-D but if usin flick can be carfull as for if you apply to much primer at once you will get solvent pop an thats a idiot haha but if done write youl be left with a nice smooth and primed bumper

this is how i done my mates and i work in a bodyshop and it hasent cracked

if plastic weldin and all goes good then id drill holes in the plastic you have weldin in so it gives the fibre glass or filler some to hold to :)

jack1 : plastic weldin is good and the best way to go about it but like this dude has said hes never done this befor so if not done propper then plastic welds will crack and out comes the filler i was going to plastic weld my mates bumper but desided fuck it just slap in the fibre glass still does the job and is just as good

personally i woudlnt recoment blasting load of fibreglass filler in,

had to redo a few that cracks from fibreglass filler,

nobs from the local college did them and look complete gash too hahahaha had to scrap them bumpers and have new bumpers

did my mate boras bumpers and still in one pice after 2 years

only got a little crack in after some old woman driving into the back of him hahhaha

not going again yout opion mate

I'm one of them if its getting done then its gettin done properly person

I did mine with Upol fibre glass filler comes in 1L tubes, and Ultima Plastic padding filler. Its not really the fibre glass filler that crack as it is flexible, If you use Ultima filler you can buy it from Halfords. Make sure you use a grinder to grind the plastic down and use P40/P80 grit paper afterwards, then a slight skim of glass filler, but make sure all is keyed even the nuts and crannyd so it has good key for fibreglass to bond to. Then once dry key up with P40/P80 an use surface filler finish shaping with P180/P240. I've done these many of times and havnt cracked at all. I even showed one of the kids i did them for and bent the bumper to show him it won't crack.
