I did mine with Upol fibre glass filler comes in 1L tubes, and Ultima Plastic padding filler. Its not really the fibre glass filler that crack as it is flexible, If you use Ultima filler you can buy it from Halfords. Make sure you use a grinder to grind the plastic down and use P40/P80 grit paper afterwards, then a slight skim of glass filler, but make sure all is keyed even the nuts and crannyd so it has good key for fibreglass to bond to. Then once dry key up with P40/P80 an use surface filler finish shaping with P180/P240. I've done these many of times and havnt cracked at all. I even showed one of the kids i did them for and bent the bumper to show him it won't crack.

cheers for that info polochris, i think i PM'd you about the bumper smoothing, i heard you did your own and you own your own bodyshop or something like that ? your polo is sweet non-the-less!!!, but what about bumper filler ? i think its called that, they sell it in halfords aswell for £9.99, at the moment I've currently got Isopon P38 and Isopon P40 and I'm contemplating getting the bumper filler, I've heard its the same as normal filler, just more flexible if that makes any sense, i dont know if you could recommend this or not ? if youve heard of it that is ?

i was on the Corsa-C forum and someone recommened to use this, dont personally know much more about it though

i cant plastic weld lol I've read up about it, but i dont think I'm going to fork out a shed load for the plastic welder, I've got alternative methods though, heat gun (dont know if that will work) and I've got a soldering iron (thats what i was going to use to "weld" the plastic)

noooooooooooooo all wrong :-D i would'nt plastic weld as for if not done write then its not effective at all id make sure you prep the bumper 1st and sand the area your smoothing realy well with an 80 grit or somthing harsh to start with then id fill it full off fibre glass ( the paste not the strands) warm it to dry well or wait for it to dry then usin the 80 grit or what ever you used to sand the bumper down use that to take down the fibre glass down then use filler to finish it off aply a guide coat and sand that off usin a 180 grit usin a flat block and keep block flat as you remove guide coat ( this will show you if theres any wobbles or low spots as for there will still be guide coat left and will also remove harsh scratches so then this will be primerble ) if your left with guide coat just keep aplyin filler take it down slightly and aply guide coat and do it again :-D intill smooth and correct

then high build primer plentty off coats and then a guide coat and use 1000 wet and dry paper ( usin water with this ) and a block and remove guide coat again :-D but if usin flick can be carfull as for if you apply to much primer at once you will get solvent pop an thats a idiot haha but if done write youl be left with a nice smooth and primed bumper

this is how i done my mates and i work in a bodyshop and it hasent cracked

quick question people is there an alternative plastic i could use to plastic weld ? or does it have to be another bumper ?, I'm thinkin of using the old bump strips and cutting/sanding them down to size and then welding them in, then a skim of filler/fibreglass on top

just a quick update

I've sanded one side of the bumper (where the bump strips used to be - the black bit in my pictures on page one) and I've sanded the area around the bump strips started of with P40 and then switched to P80, currently given up for the time being and there probably wont be any progress until after the 21st and 22nd, got exams coming up, ill update this thread as i progress with the bumper

another update, not really bumper related, but I've de-wipered the back lol...not a major update but hey, partial about the the grommet looks so might go onto www.gecleant.de and get another one that sits flush with the rear windscreen, but for now the halfords grommet will do

Bumpage, old bumpstrips were used to fill into the recess and i plasted welded them into place, I'm gonna take pics tomorrow and post them up, the car itself is progressing too, coilovers on the way, dewipered rear, aero wipers on the car now and GTi Grill is on the car too

all thats left now is to sand/blend in the welded bump strips and then a light skim of filler/fibreglass, primer and then off to paint =)

Quick update, me and my mate were sanding the bumper and the plastic welded plastic just dropped out when the bumper was picked up, looks like its onto plan B...aka DJSimmys way of fibreglass and then filler on top

I'm literally in the process of doing my rear bumper at the moment.

The key is it use strips as plastic welding rods and literally stitch them together. Dont worry about going into the bumper as the plastic filler will fill them up and give your final curve.

Il try and get some photos up soon.

Try and not go through the fiberglass route, as i know simmy got his redone if I'm correct and any minor slight bump will lead to cracking.
