Not sure what "rat look" actually is anymore, the original rat look, i like, but most of the blaggers these days are trying too hard in my eyes

On the other hand though, although i wont class it as rat look, that nova loon turned van monstrosity is absolutly amazing i love it

There are some seriously nice rat-rides out there but any chav who ran out of money kitting up his fiesta and now cant afford to paint it is calling it rat look. The point of rat imo is the detailing of the period pieces of 'junk' and the battered body work with details that actually looks good, not making a shit car even shitter.

You dont have to do anything to a nova to make it rat look. It does it to itself!

i love that nova loon conversion, looks beasty.

Theres a (I use the term loosely) "rat" corrado that's parked by Dane VW in Chester a lot. Started out as a nice blue with some BBS rims and a bit of lowerage. Nothing different but clean and tidy. Now is primer grey with sanded patches, black/yellow hazard tape on B pillars and all over the shop, checkered roof and other utterly shit touches. Old and watercooled it could work, new and a fookin' sports coupe it does not.

imo i think that mk3 golf on the first page actually looks great

love the contrast between rust and paint :L

P.S. Looking at this bora and the previous posted Golf. I think I can see a "refined rat" look coming along. Similar to the style of Jimmy's Corsa B when it had the rusted bonnet. In my opinion, that was refined rat considering the rest of it was impoeccable and the rusted bonnet just set it apart from the rest.

you've hit the nail on the head there mate, most of the people creating these so called rat look cars seem to have no idea what rat look even is, they seem to think that a roof rack and rusted bonnet is rat look then when you try and point out their fail they throw some bullshit at you like "you just don't get it" or "just because i'm doing some thing different", no mate i think tis you that don't get it and its far from different, it looks exactly the same as every other lame ass no imagination following the herd bag of shit that some one's chucked nitromores on

However i think the main reason for this is that there is no nitromores used....its natural patina. Which is the essence of rat! Like Walshy said, it came around when the hot-rodders couldnt afford to do the bodywork up, so isn't spending money to make the bodywork ratty the complete opposite of what rat-look was originally about?

Bonnet is the last place on a car to go rusty as its a huge flat surface, which water runs off. It doesn't collect. so its not going to go rusty is it

that's the shit right there, simple and effective, this is why most water cooled 'rats' fail so badly because they are trying way too hard. a real rat look car doesn't rely on stuff like roof racks and stuff to let you know that they are rat look, any of the above would be just as much a rat look car without the stuck on tat, unlike most of the water cooled 'rats' that would just look like every other old polo, nova, astra, corsa, ect, ect on the road if it weren't for the fact it had as much 'rat tat' hanging off it as they could fit on just to let you know its meant to be rat look.

I think the problem here is of labelling.

Perhaps someone with a rusty bonnet isn't trying to make their car rat look.

It's pretty hard to always be different, you can't argue with what you think looks good.

there was a green caddy low rider as well that was no doubt a proper water cooled rat, again not over done with the tat, just a few nice touches to see it along

Not seen that one...will have to keep an eye out

But its all down to natural patina, which is the reason that modern cars cant pull it off.....they have to try, theres no way its natural rust after only 3 years!
