Show cage is normally all cromed, from what i've seen, made of oversized fat tube, poor fit, poor construction and badly fitted into the vehicle. Thats my experience of seeing 'show' cages. It also seems that in a 'real' not 'show' crash that they might even cause passenger injuries in some cases.

In my opinion get a real one fitted or dont bother at all, especially if its nearly the same price!!!!!

how can you have a show crash? or do you mean a crash with a show cage in?

i think he meant if you have a shunt whilst driving as opposed to a shunt whilst your car is sat at a show... and that things like cross braces and that may cause passengers to bump thier heads!

A show cage is a fraction of the cost of the real thing...

i'm speaking from my experience on this (which is Old Skool Fords).... a half cage for a capri from tube tech is about £320... safety devices and a few others want like £600  , and they are for show only!

so thats my point, they aren't always cheaper?

show cages are more readily available I think aswel, and fit more applications, where as a roll cage is quite hard to come by I think and more car specific.

surely all cages are car specific? cos otherwise they would look shit?

Alot of the show cages have adjustable fixings and don't fit tightly and snugly into the corners, allowing them have more than one application.

example: OMP do a roll bar kinda thing - a tad over £400. fitting leaves alot to be desired and in the event of a crash, you could end up being made into a kebab.

Safety devices cages - £1200. Now i know its 3 times the cost of the OMP jobbie but the fit would be specific to your car and would probably save you should you feel the need to drive on your roof!

Show cages look pretty sweet if its a trailer queen like

cus they're all shiny and stuff

but surely you could just get a real cage and polish it? by the way, your cage must be steel to be legal for motorsport!

you didn't notice the price difference did you?

i saw the stupid safety devices price... but ignored it! you might as well get a tube forming company (like tube tech in manchester) to make a custom one.... as i have said in a previous post, they will do one for the capri for like £320... and it's motorsport legal.... i think that leaves enough change from the £1200 safety devices price to bloody chrome it, let alone polish it!

the point i was making about polishing was cos some geezer said they were good 'cus they're all shiny and stuff'...

but i feel like a bit of a keyboard comando (my fav phrase at the mo), so going to let other people discus and say their opinions... not me just reiterating the same point!

This is possibly the most well thought out reply within this thread  it gave me a chuckle.

what is the point of having a show cages or any think thats for show and doesn't actuarial work

Totally agree. I saw this one retard that put an eyeball aerial topper. Why. Whats the point ;)

It's a good point, and personally i wouldn't put anything useless on my car, unless it adds performance or volume (in the case of a stereo  ). But the same could be said for people who have 1.0l cars, but hang all sorts of body styling plastic off their cars, its for a 'look' rather than a function. Which i dont really agree with. A pretend roll cage does seen like a ridiculous idea, espeially if, as some people are saying, they can be dangerous, its adding weight, and nothing else! I suppose the intial question of whats the point of a show cage could be applied to any styling mod that does nothing for safety/performance?

That's what most modifying is about.

That's why people choose things which look better than alternatives.

My wheels are orange, that's for show, they have no purpose being orange.

All depends if your building a show car or something that you just want to have a good experience driving.

I think people put roll cages in there car because they still look cool, and when your getting out your car at asda, you dont look like an idiot in a maze of scaffolding!

You could say (to some degree) that all modifications are useless...because Volkswagen make cars, and they work! They move, they stop..

We modify cars because we want to make a car that we already like, an ideal car for ourselfs that we love even more! Why do people put 8j wheels on polos? Its because it looks good right in some people eyes right? Thats doesnt make putting 8j wheels on your car useful, but it definatley gives it a point! it makes you smile when you turn back round and look at your car!

I suppose its the same with roll cages! They may not serve a purpose in the event of a crash as appose to a full cage, but that doesnt make them pointless...if you get me? Haha!

I see your point. But roll cages have a specialist function (i.e protection). I know we all mod our cars in different ways, i think its just because I'm not really a fan of them. I'm just not really a fan of making a road car look like a racing car i guess. Maybe some people have roll cages because they are extremely safety concious?

Interesting to hear opionions. More ofthis please, beats slagging eachothers motors off (which is all some folks seem to do!

I agree...whats the point of a show cage...i understand the point of a roll cage on a motorsport used car but show cages do nothing, even if they're all shiny i dont see the point as they're inside the car and you cant see them. i guess its up to the person, i believe its samR from wycombe who put a show cage in his car and left the back seats in lol

surly a show actually derived from a love of practical cars and the whole idea is to have a car that is great on the road and therefore great at shows apposed to looking good at shows at being rubbish on the road because of some dodgy fitting show cage

imo anyway

Show cage = £200

custom roll cage = £1k+

that is, for a polo, since we're actually on a polo forum.
