what can i doo to make my 6n 1.4 8v that little bit faster ?

exhaust ?

manifold ?

cam ?

air filter ?

what else ...... ?

good service is one of the best things to start with... so new cap, rotor (condenser and points if a 6n dizzy uses that gubbins), oil change, oil filter, plugs, coolant flush and top up, this all should alos be tied in with a spot on the rollers to make sure the timing is all still bang on!

but if you are going to add and air filter and exhaust (full system, don't fuck around!) and a cam, maybe the RR sesh should wait till after that!

bore the block, dished pistons, port and polish the head, change all the valves, valve springs, maybe a big valve head (not sure if these are readily availiable but CNC heads will do it for you) really depends on your budget, faster cam (beware of this, fuel consumption will rise)

whilst this is 'proper' tuning, i aint going to disagree... but i assume since the geezer has a 1.4 to start, he is looking for mild rather than hot tuning? personally, a swap to a 1.6 would probably be cheaper and easier than all this effort for similar gain? with my capri, i had a 1.6 that was about 75bhp (when new!), modding it to 100bhp would have cost £1000's... so in goes a £150 2.0 motor with a mild tune already on it... 35-45bhp gain for less than 2 tons and a weeks work!

true, maybe swapping over the block to a 1.6 would be quicker and cheaper, but i'll stick by the fact that changing the valve springs and valves would be a good idea, which is dirt cheap, i mean, full set of valves won't cost too much and new springs wouldn't be much ither but it'll make the most of a better cam.

Its not that cheap when you add new gaskets and head bolts etc.

And its only cheap if you can do the work yourself, and even then only if you have all the tools.

You need some specialist tools to do that kind of work.

If you needed to buy a torque wrench, a valve spring compressor, maybe a stem seal puller along with 8 new valves, springs, head gasket kit and head bolts you could easily be looking at the thick end of £200.
