Are you talking about the steering column adapter thing here? I'm struggling with mie if it is

H&S

I put this thread up in the engines section the other day, what a nightmare I had with mine

http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=149419

So did you just tap it off then? Did you take all the surrounding stalks and cowling off? 'Cause i tried to get mine off, but couldn't get a decent angle on it

thanx

H&S

The cowling has 2 screws and the stalks have 3 screws that go into the ignition barrel. This all comes off easily and I actually just tapped the collar off with a small coal chisel but chewed it a bit (better with the proper puller)

Make sure you have the nut on the end of the column before you tap or pull off the collar as it is sprung and would take your eye out. Anyway I'd tread carefully because the whole shaft is telescopic and can slide and if your going to fit something after market you'll need the right lock washer to hold the spring against the barrels bearing.

As I said in that thread I've still got a gap between the stalks and the wheel, there seems to be so many variables. I had to re-fit the collar but was able to press it back on with the nut and washer. I ended up getting my local garage to check things were safe because I was paranoid about it! At least I changed the barrel which gives me a full two key set of locks.

This is all on a 89 mk2 square. Earlier mk2's (around pre87) seem to have a totally different column with the small spline and the lock washer holding the spring to the barrel.

Confused? I still am :(

Yeah, mines an 89 too. The wheel i have to replace is an old vdub one anyhow, from a beetle or something, it will fit if i take the collar off. I tried the puller, but couldnt get a decent grip around it, i think the 'hooks' on it were too thick, and i couldnt get between the collar and that metal plate thing, with all the indicator springs and gubbins on. I'm not near my car atm (uni), but when i get home i'll have another look. I may pm u if thats ok, if i get stuck? I'm pretty sure my colar has the thread on it for the nut that holds the wheel on too. Though i haven't had a look in over a year, so cant be certain. but it cant be any different to yours though, so obv it does come off. What do you think about changing the column for an older one, if i can find one?

Thanks for the help, thread will come in handy too i think

H&S

The trouble with the older column is it it's in two pieces and would be a nightmare to fit. It also doesn't have splines at the steering rack end either compared to the later one. I'm sure there will be a way to fit your steering wheel and there will be folk on here who will have more knowledge than me.

I wouldn't be starting this job if your going to need your car the next day either. I spent most of a day stressing over this because I had a Uni placement to commute to the following day!

I can only stress about safety once again with that spring on the column and the fact that you must make the column well secure to the column!

Anyone else have any advice?

the cars off the road atm, so thats no bother. Well, i'll havea look wen I'm back, and seewat i can do. At least i know it can be done now, cause i was dubious.

Thing is, if the spring pushes against the colar, when thats removed, what does the spring push against?

H&S

See that's the problem, on earlier column's there was a lock washer holding the spring against the barrels bearing but the diameter of the column is bigger on the later type. You'll probably have to source a slightly larger lock washer which should be replaced each time anyway.

What I'd like to know is how an after market boss for a something like a Mountney wheel would fit? would there be issues like KatPoloMk2 had with her old skool wheel? see here (post 118):-

Well i tried everything with the puller, i held it in place then put a large jubilee clip round the legs of keep it nice and tight but it still slips off, iv took the surround plastic bit off and the indicator stalks, well I've put it all back together now as I'm stuck but it only takes 5 mins, so will it come off if you tap it equally with a chisel? I have the same steering wheel as KatPoloMk2 but black isntead of brown i think its off a beetle ;)

If i had to get a new one would you get this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:X:RTQ:GB:1123 or

http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt...X:RTQ:FR:1123???

You and your mate must have strong arms?!

Yeah, my puller just slipped off too, anda chisel would be a beast to get the right angle with. Let me know how you get on. There's an FAQ on the subject actually

If your referring to this thread it doesn't mention a spring behind the bigger spline collar?. The later mk2's have a spring that is held against the barrels bearing with the bigger collar. Earlier mk2's have a lock nut which is smaller than the later shafts diameter! The spring must be important? Is the mk3 different?

Yeah, thats it. I noticed the ommision of the spring too. You'd think it was important, but i cant think what for :? i guess you could just put the spring back on, and then it would push against the back of the new wheel? Anyone else any ideas? I'v been trying to find a solution for a while, i thought i was being a tard, but it seems to be quite an issue

I'm bumping this to see if anyone can shed light on the matter in terms of the difference between mk3 and late mk2?

Does that spring have to go back on? and if it does can you get the right lock washer?

When you say lock washer, what do you mean? Is there one on there to begin with? I haven't had mine off i ages, so cant remember what it looks like behind the wheel. I'd have a look, but my cars 300 miles away. Any pics?

On earlier mk2's there is obviously no collar for bigger spline but there is a lock washer holding a spring against the barrels bearing instead. A lock washer is like a washer that bites onto a shaft (in this case the steering column).

I have the whole steering system off an early mk2 but the shaft where the lock washer goes is thinner on the older mk2's. Sorry no pictures. It's in the Mk2 Haynes though.

Doesnt the spring just 'push' against the collar? Therefore eliminating the need for a washer? Therefore, could't you just use the collar on the steering wheel in place of the washer? Or will the wheel not go on that far? (i haven't had the collar off yet, so i dont know!). Failing that, a different size lock washer?

i put molegrips on the collar then use the puller on the nice lip the molegrips have

Ahh, i hadnt thought of that. No doubt it shags the collar though? How did you sort the spring problem btw?

H&S

The way i sorted my spring problem was to cut the collar down (that u originally took off) so it acts like a big spacer to keep the spring in the collum...

I dont know how else to explain it really but check it out on my thread: http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?...p;#entry1391267

Thanks Kat :) ,

Makes sense to me as long as there's enough clearance to get the early steering wheel on or aftermarket bush which it looks like you've managed. I'm lucky enough to have an engineering firm near me so I'm sure this could be figured out.
